New Riflle
So im planning on doing some predator hunting in the upcoming season, just have never owned or even fired a rifle before, i mainly just hunt waterfowl for now but am thinking about branching out. Im looking for a 22-250 or .223 calibre in a savage model, i want to try to get in to the sport this year for fairly cheap thats why i decided to go with savage. Willing to spend 500-700 bucks and looking to buy new any suggestion would be greatly appriciated.
thx goosehunter

If you want a dedicated coyote rifle, the 22-250 is a good choice, but if you wanted to shoot gophers and such from time to time, I think the 223 would be a better choice. You will find 223 ammo can be found for less money than 22-250, but the 22-250 will give you a little more effective range with comparable bullet weights / rifle barrel twist rates.

You can get a Savage Axis with a scope for relatively cheap and it comes with a scope, relatively good package for just starting out. My sister just bought one, so I read quite a few reviews before letting her do so. Good bang for the buck (pardon the pun).

You can find Winchester value packs (40 rounds) for 34$ at Walmart. That's under 1$/shot for a .22-250. And that stuff shoots 1/2" groups no problem.
If your ever going to consider reloading, definitly go for a .22-250.

Not too sure if you have your heart set on a Savavge, but I would consider Weatherby Vanguards as well. I bought a 223 with a heavy barrel. The fit and finish is nice, it came with a grippy spray on the stock which I really like as well the action is nice and smooth and the trigger is great.
This is not the Series 2 so i cant say much about them. Mine was 509 plus tax. Put a Bushnell Legend 5-15x40mm mil-dot, it is a very fun rig to shoot
Good luck with your decision.

Calibres
You mention coyotes, but will there be a time you may go "bigger"? Say wolves/antelope/deer/bear? If there is a possibility then may I suggest a 243! It is the Legal Mnimum for Big Game hunting and you can get smaller loads for coyotes, gophers etc. Has better range/energy than the otheres and the cost of ammo is about the same as the 22-250.
Another option.
Good Hunting

The .224" caliber bullets are pretty much ideal for the application. The 223rem cartridge is cheaper to buy factory loads for, and you can usually find rifles with a faster rate of twist, to shoot heavier bullets, which tend to do better in the wind at longer ranges. The 223rem, also does not heat up as quickly, and the barrel life will be longer, if you plan on target shooting.

I'm with mcreg. Go with a really good .243, so you don't have to buy another rifle later to hunt deer! Don't buy cheap! You'll want to replace it later and then you will have paid double.

X2 weatherby
I have a Howa which is similar, weatherby was just about my new hunting rifle but was just over my budget. (it was a savage budget)
If not weatherby savage 111 got mine in .308 for 300$ plus tax. I've shot over 100 rounds with the scope it came with and it's still going strong.

Weatherby
I'm not a weatherby guy, but rather a Remington man. My .243 is a Remington 700 lam.stock/heavy barrel. I took it to Africa this spring and shoot warthogs/gemsbok/zebra/black wildebeest/springbok/blesbok with it. The zebra were in th 300 yd range!. All were 1 shot kills.
If you were considering a Weatherby, one of the other guys borrowed a Weatherby Vanguard in .257 and it was very impressive. He took his kudu at 410 yds-1 shot and smoked a few jackals in the 300yd range. Definetly one I would consider.
Good luck
