Yes like the BC liberals are the same as the federal liberals LOL. Do you really think a party is going to bring in a policy in their first ever term that will most definitely see them turfed after one term. I don't think so. Politicians know where AB'ers stand on guns. You can guarantee they care more about re-election than gun monitoring in a province with relatively little gun violence.

Nope. Crickets. I reposted it on Facebook to ensure that it stayed close to the top and still nothing.

Well the BC liberals (any provincial Liberal parties for that matter) consider themselves separate from the Federal party. Not so the NDP. Maybe you want to research the party before announcing how they operate?

I just sent this to the local NDP candidate,

Hi Shaye,

I have a quick question about your Provincial Party policy on firearms and firearm control.

Does the Provincial Party policy fall in line with the Federal NDP policy regarding firearms?

Thomas Mulclair has stated that if the NDP were to gain government that there would be some sort of a registry system reinstated, what are your thoughts on that?

Thank you for your time!

Let's see what he says....

Here is the reply...I'll give it to him he replies fast! Even if he didn't give me much

To be honest , any provincial party can say what they want about firearms policies but it falls under the federal government and unfortunately we don't have any say in it. As it is, none of the parties in Alberta have anything in their platforms about it.
I could only give you personal views which wouldn't really help to much.
Wish I could give you a better answer but that's all I have right now. I'll see if I can find more info.

I asked him how they felt about High River and how the RCMP handled it.

You guys don't have any interest in accurate info. Just hear what you want to hear and if you don't hear it make it up. Makes for a balanced political view

Even if they did, it would be voluntary with no teeth in terms of enforcement, no charges exist under the CC anymote. Besides, Quebec isn't going to have a registry. They'd be spending money they simply don't have.

I'm pretty sure the province has some ability to mess around with things like LTATT's, etc don't they?

Whatever they can or can't do...do we really need an anti-gun party running the province...never mind all the other damage they're going to do.

The Alberta CFO is a federal appointment. If it were provincial like Ontario, where the CFO is an OPP superintendent, then they could. This is part of the reason Ontario has such ridiculous range, club and ATT regulations and Alberta doesn't.

With Quebec wanting to start their own gun registry come hell or high water, why wouldn't a potential Alberta ndp gov't do the same in concert with Quebec?
You realize Quebec isn't run by the NDP, right?. And you are our resident Wildrose political guru? There are, however, some other provinces have been run by the NDP (Manitoba still is). Have they brought in gun registries?

Not me.
The other problem with socialists is that they want to have their cake and eat their neighbors' cake too.
And they, and the left-liberal-elite, scream for more and cheaper gasoline and at the same time want to tax the petroleum industry out of existence.

Grief is right.

I would say that stating his personal view would be helpful, as I'm sure it would influence which policies he will support, if elected.

I was of the understanding that provinces and municipalities can place further restrictions on firearms, beyond what is federally mandated... For example, consider how storage requirements for guns are different in Ontario than they are here - for instance that your rifle must be encased after sunset etc. Look at Toronto, talking about mandating central storage facilities for firearms.

That response is a full blown dodge, property rights are constitutionally in the provincial domain and therefore it's fully within the provinces right to introduce gun control measures. Just like Quebec is already considering.

Sorry to say Stinky B, but you are suggesting something that isn't true. Storage regs in Ontario are governed by the same rules as Alberta. It's under the same federal laws. Google it and you'll see.

Concerning having your firearms encased after sunset here's a note from the Ontario Hunter Education website:
Check local sunrise-sunset times. You may only hunt from a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset, except as otherwise provided. If you are in an area usually inhabited by wildlife, during the period from a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise, you must unload and encase firearms (including air gun, pellet gun, bow or crossbow) in your possession. Firearms must be securely encased in a manner whereby they are not readily accessible.

That's not to say jurisdictions aren't always trying to 'muddy the waters' through trying to create additional rules or suggest there are additional laws! To repeat: Firearms rules and regs are governed federally. If a province or municipality wants to try and add rules they will face a tough legal battle with the feds, and the Supreme Court has set precedent making such battles extremely unlikely. I don't think any party, including the NDP, here in Alberta are willing to tackle this one.

Default Response from NDP candidate Christina Gray

After reading some comments about Firearms and the NDP, I had some concerns with the talk of a Gun Registry and reclassification of fire arms by the NDP.

I emailed the NDP candidate for Millwoods, Christina Gray this morning to ask her a couple of questions regarding the Gun Registry and AHS managers. I emailed her at 11:08 this morning and she just replied about 5:30.

I am still not completely happy with the AHS response but I believe what she says about the Firearms. I believe her because she has never lied to me, which is a plus in itself, as the PC's have done nothing by lie for decades, especially the last one.

Christina Gray Response:

Thanks for reaching out to me. I can tell you that the Alberta NDP are not proposing or planning any such changes to gun laws in Alberta. Rachel Notley grew up near Fairview and as such knows what rural life is about and the importance of long guns to hunters, ranchers, farmers and anyone else with an active outdoor lifestyle. Many people in my own family & friends are also hunters, my father-in-law and my best friend’s father being two hunters I’m quite close with.

With regards to AHS management, what Rachel Notley has said is that there’s nothing more to be gained from yet another reorganization. The PCs have centralized and decentralized AHS so many times now that the entire system is just chaos. Rachel is proposing a period of time where we let the current management structure work as it is, and only in time will we look at perhaps trying to revise that structure. Having said that, her commitment to keep more funds in health care is all about ensuring that those funds go towards having more front line services and not more management or overhead. And if your concern is about the ridiculous expense claim scandals we’ve seen out of various Health authorities over the years, rest assured that no one will do a better job of shutting down such needless excess than myself & Rachel Notley.

I come from a Project Management background, my skills are in exactly this area, figuring out which parts of a team or a process have stopped adding value, and then making sure appropriate actions are taken to get things back on course. This is what I would do as your MLA.

I hope I’ve answered your questions and I hope you’ll choose to vote for me & the NDP. Advanced Polls are now open, today (Wed) , Thurs, Fri and Sat as well, if you wish to vote early. Advanced Polls take place at the Elections Alberta office at 6550-28 Ave, from 9am to 8pm each day.

All the best & have a great day,

Christina Gray

The supreme court ruling was directed at a now dismantled gun registry. A new federal registry is a do over.

That right there tells it all. Notice how she carefully pointed out long guns only for hunting. No mention of target shooting, handguns, or restricted guns.

It wouldn't really what the NDP says or does, people like you two have closed minds. You have and will read something negative into anything they propose. Did she give a 100 point detailed reply, no and rational people do not expect one right now, just some broad strokes on what they are trying to achieve, like the other parties have done.

Vote for who ever you like, I couldn't really care less, with all the BS about NDP implementing gun control, I just asked the question, and she replied.

She didn't side step either question, just gave a truthful answer and let me decide for myself, I respect that, and so should you, whether you decide to vote for them not.

Come, come now. Who is being close minded to believe the NDP wouldn't like to do a little tightening up of gun laws?
