Check the trout stocking list on the RELM site. I'm not familiar with the Calgary area for brook trout.

Make a few trips down to Lethbridge and hammer some nich. sheran brookies. They are big, fat, and fun to catch on light weight gear.

You could also try butcher lake up by the pincher creek shell plant. They are mostly typical stocker size but can once and awhile get into a good one.

If the conditions were right you might be able to hit Elbow Lake in Kananaskis. Keep in mind that the gate on Hwy 40 is locked on Dec. 15 (I think) so you'd have to go before then. Also keep in mind that there is a fairly steep hike of just over a km or about, so if there is snow on the ground, it would also probably not be possible to get up there, or at least not worth the effort. The fish are not big though, but it might be an option for you.

I was catching brookies yesterday at Sibbald Meadows Pond and in the beaver ponds across the road from there. THere is already ice on both places. Not safe to walk on though. The ice on Sibbald melts late in the day but the beaver ponds stayed frozen.

One of the more popular discussed lake on this forum is Birch. It is near Beaver and Burnstick. Do a forum search for it and you'll find lots of posts.

Ya remember its a "secret" lure used to hammer them out there.

The best part is I am going to invite a few boys from the Calgary area out this winter to hammer the brookies and see how we do without knowing that "secret" lure.

You were catching brookies in the beaver ponds through the ice?

If no, then no worries.
If yes, time to read the regs again.

They are stocked brookies. They will hit a piece of hot dog on a hook if you throw it down there. I caught brookies on pretty much everything I put down the hole last season. It is just a matter of knowing where the fish are hanging out and there is more then enough of us that know the most productive area.

There was ice around the entire beaver pond except right by the actual dam itself along the edge where I was fishing for brookies. The ice was way too sketchy for me to walk on and fish through and I know the rules and would not drop line through ice into a beaver pond.

Figured so....

I haven't fished there for a few years. I remember Dodging cars with the backcast....

I've caught some really nice brookies out of that spot, and the pond on the N side of the road.

Well we bring the hotdogs, cuz those fish kicked our butts at ice season. Spring was great but under the ice our hooks were surrounded by tiny perch that just pestered us constantly.

You were probably fishing to deep if the little perch were around. Let me know when you are down and I will see if I can help you get into some brookies. Just bring the typical trout ice fishing gear and maybe a few of the "secret" that was posted at the end of last season. The brown trout are the ones I can't figure out in that pond.

We were in about 5 feet of water along the cattails in front of the big pine tree east of the parking lot.....saw alot of small pike that looked like they hadnt eaten all year.
we did get 3 browns off the rocky point across from the spot i described but they all got caught on a phoebe and meat.
