I'm a fan of Leupold scopes. I also like the old school Weavers. For me, I would rather have my gun wear a used Leupold that a new "low end" scope. I have had good luck finding what I needed at gunshows. For example, I picked up a nice VXII with the target dot, fine x-hair and target turret for $200.00 @ Thorncliff. A few years back, I scored a beautifule Bausch and Lomb Balvar for my lever gun. Those, the old weavers etc, are real good quality scopes.

If you must have a new lower end scope, my choice would be the Redfield. I've looked thru and mounted a few. Pretty decent value I think. I know nothing of Vortex.

Whats your budget look like?

Pocket change to some is the life savings of others.

You can save money by getting a fixed magnification scope.
So...maybe a 6 power instead of a 3-9

AOF is a great site to find yourself a nice scope at a reasonable price. I personally would rather have a good used scope than a new cheap one.

You can find nice 3 x 9 Leupold's and Bushnell 3200 Elite's in the $225, give or take, range.

This is very adequate for your rifle.

For the price of a low -end variable, you can buy a Leupold 6x and have a good quality, rugged and reliable scope and a scope which will look good too. Leeper

Works every time!!
It's a danged hunting rifle I would assume , not a 1,000 yard match rifle , or a long range varmint thingy!

I think you would like the vortex diamondback for about 200 bucks, pretty rugged optics.

This is good advice from Cat and Leeper (and the many others who have stated it in the past). I hunted for 20 years with a 4x. Never handicapped me in the field even once.

And I never forgot to turn my scope down to 3x when walking in the bush, as I have since I moved to variable scopes. Cost me a big moose in northern BC 10 years ago that was standing a few yards off the trail I was walking on. Needless to say, he didn't wait around for me to turn my scope down

BTW, don't ever be afraid to ask advice, as that's why this place exists.

If you have your heart set on a variable, read this as it should help:

I would poke around for a good used fixed power like a Leupold. I have three fixed six powers on different rifles(two Leupolds and a Ziess)and don't feel like I am missing any thing by going the fixed route. The Ziess I picked up used at Corlanes for cheap, one of the best things I've ever bought.

Default cheap scopes

Cheap scopes are not really a good idea. I found if you're not happy with any purchase and have to do it twice or three times it is far from cheap. Leeper is on the right track with the good quality 6X's. I have 4 of them and they work fine for field use. I do like a little more power when load testing though. The Leupold 6X42 is my standard.

I would NEVER go the route of a fixed 6x. Not my cup of tea. The bushnell 4200 series or Weaver grand slam have been dependable performers for the money.

I've been quite impressed by the Bushnell Legend line, really good optics with side parralax adjustment. I pt one on my inline and have loved it. Vortex is great as well.

I put a redfield revolution 4x12 on my 25-06. It's the first redfield I've owned and I'm impressed. I think it was $349 at cabelas.

According to Leupold's own website, the internals of the Leupold Rifleman are absolutely equivelent to the classic Vari-X II.

Around here, the VX-1 (not VX-I) is the same price as the rifleman at $299 and is really great quality and optics. It's superior to the previoius VX-II.

Great value.

I've also had really good luck with the Bushnell Elite line but I don't like how short the eye relief is on them. For my body type, I have trouble mounting them far enough back. Since the new elite is $279, might as well go with Leupold. That also gets you access to the alumina accessories which are great and the superior tube coating which won't scratch from mounting and the great eye box.
