Smile How can I fasten a braided loop connector

I just purchased a braided loop connector , I have to slide unto the fly line , then heat it to 200degrees F , this is done to shrink braided loop onto line , problem is it can be tricky to do cause I'm using a cigarette lighter to heat the braid ,if you get to close you can destroy the connector . I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice on how to do this without problems , or some other way to connect,Thankyou .

I just put one of those on over the weekend. Lacking a heat gun I just lit a tea candle and shrunk the tube by keepin it about ~6" above the absolute tip of the visible flame and constantly moving things to avoid any hot spots.

Just be careful and take your time and you should be fine.

If you are in Calgary, Fish Tales has a machine that will weld your fly line into a loop

I've had the heat shrink tubing fail on me in the past, losing my leader and fly to a nice salmon.Nowadays I chuck the shrink tube in the garbage first thing, inchworm the braided loop onto the flyline, then secure it with 3x tippet tied in a nail knot.....aint no way thats pullin off!

If you wish to use the loop then here is how it's done. Place loop onto line, Take your fly vice and place loop and line in vice. Now take your bobbin of thread and wrap up and down like you were starting and finishing a fly. Use some tension and suck the braided loop down. Whip finish and cover thread with fishing glue.

Here's a good tip...

You can do the same thing without the braided loop by forming a loop with the end of your fly line and wrapping the thread around the the base of the loop. Again use your fly vise to cinch down lightly and hold your loop so you can wrap the thread to hold it together. When it becomes worn, cut off the loop and repeat. Save time, money, your line, and never lose a fish again due to your loop coming off or unravelling. Even better is you can reel this past your guides if needed and it comes back through the opposite direction easily unlike the knot.

Making an indestructible loop from just your line, some thread, and some Zap a Gap glue.

A wee blurry but you'll get the point.

I use my Quick tie tool to make a nail knot when I put the fly line in the end I double it back forming a loop. I snug up the nail knot trim all the tag ends. Perfect loop in the fly line. I usually use 10 lbs mono for the knot and a dab wader repair glue to smooth it out. works great.

this is shrink wrap.
i used to do it with a lighter, quickly pass the blue part of the flame under the shrink wrap and stop when it shrnk.

any heat gun will do the job

butane torch does a nie job but you have to go quick.

wth practice, i manage to do a real nice job with a propane benzomatic torch, just be carefull.

Like others have said, rotate slowly, about 6" off the flame, avoiding heat spots. I personally dislike the connectors, because they costed me a very big fish out of a lake 2 years ago, that being said, a nail knot of mono above the shrink wrap, and some super glue, that thing wont move at all!

Default Thankyou guys for braided loop info

All great ideas , I have tied a loop with a nail knot, ihave also heated with a lighter, and ended up destroying loop .the idea of tying a nail knot over the braided loop never entered my mind , good idea .heat gun you mean a construction heat gun , not a hair dryer I assume, thanks for the overwhelming response to my question

Default loop

The best material for doing a nail knot on the loop is dental floss. Ties tighter and stronger then either thread or mono. Once it's done, will never loosen and lasts longer then you'll ever need

Default lght bulb

Just roll it over your incandescent light bulb. 60 watt should do the trick. Its what I use. No flame no hot spots.
