Default Fortress lake

Going to make the trek in June. Does anyone have any experience at this lake and know which early season bugs might be effective? Thanks for your time.

Not totally sure, but is the ice even off in June?! The rest of the rockies are pretty much still frozen at that time of year!

How are you going to get across the Chaba if it is blowing out?

Pukes Kanada should put a bridge across the Chaba except the Ottawa puppets in Calgary will not allow it.

Politcs has to become involved.

Should be ice off by June. It's a wee lower elevation that most mountain lakes. Have fun...

Yes, it will be ice free. Lake is at 4500 ft.

Thanks guys. I am assuming streamer fishing will be the order of the day. Other than Woolley buggers and muffler minnows are there any MUST HAVES?

green doc spratley was king when I was there two years ago in May... and the ice was off... just. Pumpkin head was good too. Just get it deep. You need to pack a belly-boat in. Can't really cast well from shore. Chaba is best crossed earlier in the am and rises as the day goes on. We did the 26km in one day but you could ride a bike in to about 14km if you wanted.

Hope that helps.

Cheers.

Those fish aren't picky. Depth, movement, and timing is more important. I did find they tended to like purple, black, and green more than the lighter colours. Red underbellies were also helpful since there aren't any other fish in there other than brookies. I found once a pod has seen your streamer and they haven't taken it then they are likely off the bite. Just like any streamer fishing really, if they don't smash it on the first good presentation then you either have to switch to a totally different streamer and try again or move on to another fish.

Dave Jensen and his wife run guided trips up there and retreats. Talk to them as well as Bow River Troutfitters.
