Default The best time??

When is the best time to 'prune' a Schubert cherry tree? I'd like to prune it now as the new growth has grown three to four feet and leaves are starting to fall? I pruned it for the first time last fall. As usual, your guidance is appreciated. I live in the Edmonton area.

I took a pruning coarse years ago, the best time is in the spring before they bloom is what I learnt.

We usually do ours in the spring. In my area I check frequently for black knot and amputate immediately.

Call Greenland Nursery's in Sh. Pk. They have experts. I have heard that you should not prune cherry (and many other flowering trees) in the fall.

The safest time is when the leaves all are gone. That is the indication that it is now dormant and you can safely prune.
