Default Another old tool query??

Today at work on the farm we were cleaning out an old storage shed and came across this....

Is it meant for something special or is it just a neat homemade wrench ?

To me it looks like a home made wrench to open/close a water or gas valve.

It is an old ratchet. I've seen one before.

The long upper leg of the handle engages notches in the outer diameter of the part with the square hole. It has enough spring in it to snap from notch to notch. You flip it over to change directions.

Default Bung tool

My guess would be a home made wrench for opening the air hole on the top of a 45 gallon metal drum.

Those old timers did some amazing things with what they had available to them. Seen some neat stuff in my travels. No princess Auto in those days.

So are there notches in the circular piece? It looks like the circular piece is machined to accept the rod. Doesn't look home built by the average person, I would lean towards a bought ratchet.

I just cleaned it up a bit and there ARE notches on the circular part. Now I'm pretty sure it isn't homemade.

Recall seeing them on old horse drawn wagons and bob sleighs.

This is right. My uncle has one just like it that still works. Pretty simple effective design.
