Default 243 pet load

Ive got an old 243 remmy that has been a safe queen for way too long .. Want to start reloading for it , any pet loads or favorite powders I should try ? I want to use 100 gr Hornady BTSP bullets .

While I've never bought into the "pet load" theory here's a load I've had success with. It shot 3/4 MOA to 300M in a Kimber. However it might shoot like SSG's in a modified choke in your rifle.

I've fired this load in three 243's with good results, excellent results in two of them.

Nosler brass, Fed GM210M primer, 43.5 grs H4831SC under a 95 gr Ballistic Tip.

Use a good dose of IMR 7828SSC and a CCI 250 primer, in Remington cases.

Berger 87 gr. VLD's. IMR4350. Federal match primers. Winchester cases. I've deburred the flash hole, uniformed the primer pockets, turned the necks just a bit, which are all steps that only need doing once. Anneal the necks every 2nd firing.

I have a Remington 700 with a factory varmint profile barrel in 243 that shoots many loads OK, but none great. I eventually tried RL17 powder with 105 Hornady Amax bullets loaded to about 5/1000 off the lands (which is way out there with the long throat of the Remington factory barrels). The most accurate loads were right at published maximums, showing slight pressure signs, but nothing crazy. That combination increased accuracy by about 3/10 of an inch to right at 0.5-0.6 MOA, which made me happy. It also increased muzzle velocity by about 40-50 FPS vs. other powders I tried. It shoots well on paper at 100 and stays sub-MOA out to 600 on metal. I've killed deer in Texas with this load from 100 to about 350 yards and the bullet performed very well. It rarely exits but punches through ribs just fine and shreds heart/lungs. It may be worth a try. Good luck! I LOVE/HATE finding the right loads for my rifles

IMR 4350... Although, I am probably switching to 4451 for the increased temp-stability.

I just reloaded some 243 with 85 ft Game Kings for two different rifles. Im starting at 37.2 grains of IMR4166. Hopefully those will show some promise. But I have had great results with IMR4895 and 85gr SST's in 243 as well. Don't have the exact powder charge weight handy at the moment though.

2 of my .243 like 80 gr ballistic tip for coyote control. And 100 gr Hornady interlocks for deer. Winchester case, CCI 200 primer and amount of IMR4350 depends on the weight of the pill being launched.

Have used Win 760 with 100 grain bullets for decades. It worked well in BLRs and bolts.

I've experimented with 7828SSC as suggested by Dick284 and 760 as you have. Never had much luck with them. My best results have been a mild load of IMR4350 like 39.7 gr. for good grouping. Mind you, my resulting velocities weren't idiotic, but grouping was stellar. 2912 FPS with that charge.

What you have said.

Using what has worked gives you a referance to start.

The late Ken Waters "Pet Loads" manual was pretty much bang on the majority of the time and saved me a lot of components /time......Harold

My 243 likes 42.5 gr IMR 4831 with 100 gr boat tails. I tried a couple other powders but did not get good results.

Is the rifle a pump action or a bolt ??

If you get some warm loads in a pump you may have some extraction problems... JMHO

H-380, I have tested that exact bullet, with 2 different powders. Gun is a Savage predator 10/110 max 1-24"/ 1x9.25 twist. Both these loads shot sub 1/2 moa @ 100yds. #1-- lapua case, fed.gm. std. primer, 41gr. Hybrid 100 V-.010" off lands. this load chronoed 3030fps. avg, & is well under max from Hornady manual Data. #2 - Lapua case, fed. gm.std. primer, 40.5gr. H-4350, .010" off lands, - this load chronoed -3004fps. avg. & is under max. from Hornady Manual. For some reason my gun shoots this bullet well above Hornady's stated velocities, with less powder which is a bonus. The 100 Hornady interlock is much more fur friendly on coyotes from my tests than the 105 HPBT match Hornady. ---Have fun.

105gr Hornady Amax (soon to be discontued, replaced by the 105gr ELD-M)
Hornady brass - trimmed @ 2.035"
IMR 4350 @ 39.0 grains
Win WLR primer
COAL @ 2.810 "

Ok, Back along time ago, in the 70's I had a Rem 760 GameMaster in 243WIN.
I used a 100gr SPEER BTSP, and 40gr of IMR 4831 with a CCI 250 (Mag) primer, that load would shoot out the lights on deer.
From what I can make of my scribbled data in my logs it looks like it was running between 28/2900 FPS out of the 22" BBL. I'm sure if you ask someone here with QL will be able to verify things. Those old loading manuals left a lot to be desired.....

Today was a calm day to confirm come-ups at various ranges. I shot 300, 400 and 500 meters. This target is at 500 meters (nearly 550 yards). This is the load that I've posted earlier, 87 gr VLD's, IMR4350 x 39.7 gr, Fed Match primers and a 0.075" jump to lands. I would have liked to put 5 rounds on target, but the cows were curious and ended up standing in front of my target. I've calculated 0.27 MOA. Rifle is a Howa 1500. Scope is a Vortex Diamond Back. I should also mention that I shot prone off of a Harris bi-pod and rear bag in order to practice for the rules of an upcoming match. I don't much like bi-pods and prefer a front rest, but them are the rules.

For sure. Funny thing about that is that the herd can be a mile away. They hear a gun shot and they just have to come in and investigate.

Savage 11, 20" barrel 9.25 twist. 85 gr Sierra Varminter, 43.5 gr H414, .020" off the lands. Getting .4 MOA easy w Vortex Diamondback 4-12 AO scope.
Getting 3206 fps avg which Lyman says I should be getting with 44.5 gr of H414. Thought it goes the other way with a short barrel?

I have used IMR 4350 , magnum primers and Nosler 95 and 100 gr partitions for about 40 years. I am not going to change for any reason. I prefer the 95gr, but they are not always available and the 100's shoot the same sighting.

I can't comment on a Remmy 243 but am a savage guy with a couple different rifles in the 243. I don't care for any 100 grain load in either gun. Drop down to the 85 or there abouts and I see no reason to handload as even my generic although well maintained savages put up real tight groups with factory ammo. Like an inch at 200. With the 100 grain I would get a flyer on my first or third shot it seemed. Usually 3-6 inches wide and high. Never happens with lighter loads but remember it's generic gun and a 25 dollar box of cartridges

Fellow shooters, I my post (see #21), I posted a target that I had shot at 500 meters. I could only get 3 shots on target because of the cows moving in front of the target, I had intended for 5 shots. However, I went back the very next day to try and duplicate this target. No cigar, needless to say, I am a bit disappointed and I don't want to mislead anyone in thinking that I am a fake sniper. So, back to the drawing board. Gonna try it again with the 87 gr Bergers and a new load using 70 gr. SMK's when they arrive.
