I have not tried it but how about a bit of armor all? I know I slide off bus seats with it on so maybe ice would fall off easier?

Dip rod tip in the water it will get the ice off the guides. They also make a paste for that exact reason. Don't use armor all it is made with petroleum

along those lines I have Recoil guides on my custom rod, they're bendable and indestructible. I simply squish them between my fingers and the ice all breaks off.

Haven't ever heard of a way to keep them from freezing in the first place...

well, yeah just didnt want it to screw up my fly rod guides. Ive seen pictures where the guides are all blocked on the fly rod and it doesnt look pleasant. The water solution makes sense.

The best solution to keep your rod guides from icing while fishing from November through April is to go fly-fishing in Mexico, Belize , Cuba, Bahamas ,,,,

Seriously!!!

KY is completely water soluble... not sure if it would work, except maybe allowing the line to slide easier through the iced up guide

The problem with water soluble products is that they would wash off... You are trying to repel water not lubricate your rod...

How about a silicon lubricant. If the ice does stick it should come off easily. Put on the night before going out.

I had some success withe the gel fly flotant on my guides, the ice seems to clear on the rod flex in back cast. I have a 4 wt sage , and it's always the tip that I can't keep clear, my reel sometimes gets stiff too. I fish rivers in the winter, anything below - 15 is just to cold though, can't keep up to the ice on the line or my fingers.

Loon Outdoors makes a paste specifically for keeping guides ice free.

Sounds great, I love to use floatant in the summer for dries, it really works but a little bottle is ten bucks, so I'm sure I'll get what I'll paid for. Great to hear

Don't fly fish below 2 degrees you won't have a problem, also get closer to you intended target you won't have to retrive line through the guides thus no water in them.
