Default Winchester Model 1894 Investigation

I grew up loving Westerns on TV and the I have always wanted what I thought was called a "Coach Gun." After doing some reading I discovered that coach guns where actually shot guns and that the rifle I always wanted is a Winchester Lever action. I am looking to buy a Model 1894 ('94). My Question is how do I determine if the rifle is of decent quality. ie. action, barrel, rifling.
I would like to shoot the gun so what caliber would be best, and what kind of variations on the '94 are out there

Thanks for any help folks

I would look for a newer one in nice shape. They can be had for 3-400 bucks. Then as you feel the need to collect you can expand and buy more. Get a 30-30 first as they are cheap to shoot and easy on the shoulder.

Aside from the movies, the actual rifles used in the day were not 1894's.
More likley 1873's, 1886's, or even 1892's.

There are many replicas out there, just start searching the web to find out more.
