Default Chargemaster

I noticed today that my chargemaster weighs about a 1/2 grain heavier if the clear plastic cover is closed than it does with the cover open. Checked with scale check weights, and all is well but have to weigh all charges open or closed, not a mix of both!! Anybody experience this?? Any ideas why?

No idea. Once I remove the cover to calibrate the unit, I leave it off, until I am finished loading.

Probably a static electricity charge in the plastic cover.

Or could be air movement from the furnace.

Un-frikkin believable. Remove the cover, off the hinges when using it. Put cover back on to protect from dust when NOT using it. Must be smarter than Chargemaster...

The cover is there, to help prevent outside influences from affecting the scale. It has noting to do with dust. If you take a look at any type of accurate lab scale, they are surrounded by glass/plastic for this reason.

Obviously, closing the lid completely is difficult on the Chargemaster, and not conducive to good accuracy, but closing it over and not latching it, is certainly better than not having it there at all.

Must not be smarter than scale manufacturers...

Covers on analytical scales are used to remove outside environmental influences....mostly air currents.
If your scale is in a neutral environment (no air movements....low traffic area) and level, use of the cover is not necessarily required.

Trial and error will tell you if the cover is needed or not, mine stays open while in use and closed when idle.

This is also my practice and I have had no such problems either.

Don't worry about it man.
Sometimes our naughty side comes out.

I like the fact that you were paying attention, which is why you noticed your CM was behaving in strange ways. Paying attention to details is what safe reloading is all about, so your instincts will serve you well and keep other range users safe.

Give me a thrower and a beam scale. Faster, and more fail safe IMO.

Chuck, it's not faster if you seat your bullet while the Chargemaster is throwing a load. It is finished just as you finish seating the bullet.

Once you have a chargemaster, you'll wonder why you didn't buy one sooner. Accurate as a beam scale and much faster.

I like the Chargemaster for big stick powders, big batches of stick powder stuff. For small batches, I use the Lee spoons and a beam scale, for large batches with ball powder, the BR3 thrower. If I remember to turn it on at the beginning, I will use the Chargemaster for small batches of whatever, also. It is convenient, but, I can get by without it. If I had a powder thrower that worked reliably with big stick powders, I wouldn't bother with the Chargemaster.

Technically you are right. However there is NO SINGLE ADDITION to your reloading bench that will make it a more enjoyable process. Second to the Chargemaster is an electronic case prep center. I bought the Lyman last year, as it is a bit bigger and comes with more attachments than the RCBS, and it too is a real keeper.

Elk11 posted a picture of the RCBS power trimmer/case prep center. That unit is a Cadillac! Dang nice.
