Rocky Mountain Rifles?
Anyone own or have any firsthand shooting experience with these rifles. I fondled one at Huntfest this year and it felt amazing. I am seriously thinking about picking one up in 280AI but wanted to get some feedback from those who shoot/hunt with a RMR. The rifle would mainly be used for Elk and Sheep so any suggestions on modle type or custom options would be appreciated.

Below are three consecutive groups fired with the 300RUM that Corlane built for me using a 700 action, Gaillard barrel, and Mcmillan stock.

I just ordered a rifle from Kevin Weaver at Weaver Rifles in Colorado. He is making beautiful rifles at a great price. I have personally seen 2 of his rifles and would say that they are nicer than a RMR and as nice as a Bansner Rifle. Good Luck.

I wanted a gun for the same critters and I didn't want a heavy one or one that kicked the snot out of me. I went with a 260 AI RMR. McMillan Edge stock, PacNor barrel and the Thinhorn (Defiance) custom action. The rifle is a dream to shoot and deadly accurate. So far this year it has accounted for a bighorn, bull elk and 2 whitetail bucks.
If the RMR you fondled at Huntfest was tan colored you were fondling my rifle.

Had threre RMR Down to one
There were three RMR in our Family however we sold two of them.
All are very accurate and for the most part well built rifles, except for the fact that corlane made the chamber to tight in two out of the three rifles,Which is ok if you reload your own ammo because we had to use special shell holder's when we resized the brass.
we had a 257wby mag,& 30-06 that were sold and my cousin still has his 270win RMR,that has a tight chamber. If you bought factory ammo for his 270 win and shot it in the rifle, after the shot the bolt wont open, due to the tight chamber.
Either way I dont think you can go wrong with a RMR i'd put them right up there with the cooper's!!!

Rmr
I have the Alpine extreme 308 win. it weighs 4lbs. 11oz.It is a real tiny rifle, but a joy to pack.It shoots very well for a small light rifle, the fit and finish is very nice.I will try to post pics in a day or two, my laptop blew up, and I had to get a new one, so have not swapped everything over.

Rmr
RMR Iended up buying this used, but do not regret it,I have never used the brakes that came with the rifle, as I hate brakes , and I don't find the recoil to be a problem.I have had a couple Kimber 84m Montana rifles that were very light, but this is noticably lighter.

A stock Cooper is not the equal of a properly built custom, but then again, at less than $2000 for the Cooper, the price isn't comparable either.
For those people who would like a stainless Cooper action,or a magnum Cooper action, both will be available very soon.

Great! Thanks for all the responses guys. Those are some pretty amazing groups you guys are getting. I think I am leaning towards the Thinhorn (Defiance) chambered in 280 AI. T.J. and Rich, what barrel length did you end up going with?

Now I'm really curious. It looks like the eye relief leaves a lot to be desired. Is it as bad as it looks? For comparison here is a VX III 3.5-10 on a SA 700.

Have a look at the picture of Sheephunters rifle, with a similar scope, it looks much more like yours. It appears that 209x50 holds his head very differently than you while he is shooting, and mounts his scope to suit that hold.As for the eye relief, at least with Zeiss, the eye relif doesn't vary greatly as you change the magnification.with Leupold, a variation of around 1" is common.

lop, different shooting style, physical size of shooter.......come on Chuck, this stuff doesn't need to be explained to you does it?

Correct, with my eyes I have about 3 3/4" eye relief on this scope at 11.94 magnification that my hand load dictates for the ballistic reticle to be on out to 800 yards. It also has a 14 1/2" length of pull and fits like a dream.

Wow. I'm sorry you're offended. I assumed since it was a custom rifle that LOP would be correct (I now see that he prefers an unusually long LOP) and given the scope placement I was wondering about eye relief on this particular scope.

You didn't offend me at all...that's why I was laughing at you (lol) I was just surprised you didn't pick up on the obvious considering your experience with custom rifles. Obviously you didn't assume LOP was correct either or you'd have figured out why the scope position was different. LOP varies between shooter...not everyone is the same That's one of the many reasons to have a custom rifle built..... Mine is corect for me and I'm sure yours is correct for you so why is it so hard to believe that 209's is correct for him?

Hey Just a quick derail sorry. I was wondering how you like the rapid Z 800 reticle? I ordered that scope in the 50mm but sent it back for a meopta. The scope was great I just wasn't a fan of how small the reticle was and I got nervous about how different zoom changed your balistics. But Im sure if you have it figured out it is a great scope. Do you have too leave your magnification at a certain power? I have been wondering how it would have performed in the field since I sent it back this is why I am asking you for your experience on the scope.
Thanks Justin
