Default Horse meat, would you?

I work at the University of Alberta and my supervisor is looking at conducting a study on horse meat products, and they are trying to get a feel for potential panelists for the study.

So my question is, would you be willing to eat horse meat?
And what area in the province do you live?
Northern Alberta = North of Edmonton
Central Alberta = South of Edmonton to Calgary
Southern Alberta = South of Calgary

This is all confidential and they really just want to get a feel if there are enough people to potentially do the study and if location in the province is important.

Thanks so much for your time.

Patrick

A room mate of mine from college days cooked up a roast for us once, didn't tell me what it was. I knew it wasn't cow, moose, elk, deer, bison, pig....but had no idea what I was eating. It was indeed horse. Didn't put me off at all, tasted fine. His family was from Manitoba, french background, and it was a common thing for them. I wouldn't go looking for it, but if served on my plate, as a guest, bon appetite! It is actually quite tasty.

I have never tried horse meat but ate donkey burgers in China. It was not bad, but like another said, I would not go looking for it.

I had a mule burger once they didn't tell me until after a mule broke its leg and they didn't want to waste the meat. Didn't taste much different than a beef burger however after that whenever I went there for BBQ after I made sure the dog was okay.

I've eaten lots of different animals. Horses sound like delicious grass fed goodness.

I've eaten horse meat a lot and enjoyed it. Back home (in Kyrgyzstan) horse meat and dishes prepared from horse internals and fat are a very popular.

Let me get this straight... the mule broke its leg after you had the burger? Well anyway, I guess it was fresh.

Well this is timely.
Horse market is down and because of the prices i was put a couple of mine in the freezer for dogfood.

A young friend offered is assistance on condition that he takes some of the steaks and roasts. I've never eaten horse, I was always afraid I'd get the 'trots'. but looks like I'll be trying it now. He really likes it.

I was at a friends house several years ago for dinner. He was from Switzerland and horse meat isn't uncommon there. He made a roast but I couldn't bring myself to even try it.
It looked OK and smelled fine but... I dunno.
I would if it came down to horse meat or no meat.

I'd hate to to be saddled with cooking it though. I'm no galloping gourmet.
I would have to let someone else take the reins on that one.

Ate it once long time ago in Russia. It was in a form of dry salami. I remember it was very good! Never had it as a cooked meat.

Default Once

Did it once when they served it in the cafeteria of the office I worked in in Paris...never really paid attention until I cut into it. I think the jockey whip marks were still in it, chewed on it until my jaw got sore, then took a second bite, threw out the rest.

There's not too many things they won't eat over there. Not for me.

problems...drawing lines on photos.
In all seriousness, Good Luck with your study.
Besides the expected emotional backlash, the only downside is the potential cost impact for recreational horse ownership. Similar to what happened about 25 years ago when we started shipping meat horses to Quebec.
IIRC- little Suzie's riding horse went from a $300 nag to a $900 filet mignon practically overnight. Took a lot of people by surprise.

Horse meat is lean and quite healthy.

I Europe I've had numerous cured meats, salami's and other products both horse and horse/pork mixes.

I don't recall ever eating a horse steak or roast but wouldn't hesitate to try it.

If you really think about what animals we do eat, what they eat, what they roll in and how they live (like a pig) - a horse is about as clean as you can get.

There are very few things I wouldn't try out at least once.

Have and would again. Like others have said, it tastes a bit sweeter, but nothing wrong with it at all.

Feral horses from the west country best of all.

Not a chance in the world I would eat my favorite rope horse or any other horse for that matter. I've owned too many faithful horses to even consider it. Anyone who calls himself a horseman would agree.

Pigs are naturally clean. The humans raise them in close quarters where the pig has no choice but to wallow in its own filth. If pigs are free ranged they seem to be fairly clean...

As for the OP: I have eaten horse and will do it again without hesitation.

Have in the past and would do so again. When I lived in Vancouver there was a small shop that specialized in horse meat. Made all kinds of sausages and a good selection fresh cuts.
