Default 0.410 semi auto?

Hey everyone, first post on this part of the forum....

I just recently got into grouse hunting. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a .410 in semi auto? I want to have one for 1) hiking trails during grouse season 2) ultra light bear protection during the off season.

Any suggestions would be great! My price range is kinda variable. I'd like to keep it inexpensive if possible (less than $800), but if they only offer good quality guns about $800 I would consider it.

Cheers

Do yourself a favor, and get a 20 gauge, just shoot high when ground swatting grouse, and you will have less shot in the meat, than if you center a 410 pattern on the bird. It will also be much more useful if you try and shoot birds on the wing, and totally superior for bear defense. If you insist on a 410 semi auto, there are some 1100 skeet guns around that are reliable, at decent prices.

Also if your heart is set on a semi .410 look for a remington 11-48 fun little guns. I grabbed one years ago great for chickens. They show up every once and awhile on the gun forums for sale.

saw video on youtube from this guy named buffalo i believe, reviews lots of stuff and pretty good at it, he does quite a bit of 410 stuff, he likes this imported 410 semi i think it was called tristar? anyway, search for it, he says it's comparable up to the rem 1100 but half the price, early ones had some hiccups but he said the company has fixed and stepped up and is making good value, looked like a lot of fun

henry has some lever actions worth looking at imo, the ones with the side loading port would be slick

ultra light bear protection during the off season.

If you think you have problem with the bear before you shoot him, guaranteed you will after.

Agree, a can of bearspray is maybe 10 oz and more effective. But I also understand his desire for a 410...just not for bears but for fun and much smaller critters.😉

A 20 also gets you inexpensive ammo, like $8 a box instead of $20+.

I think you should consider a 28ga if its a small light shotgun your after, Franchi, Remington, Benelli all make one in a semi. i suspect there are others.
really regret selling my 28ga Remington 1100.

I had a Remington 1100 in 410 for shooting skeet. I loaded my own ammo so cost was not an issue. When I quit shooting skeet competitively I sold my 410 loader along with the rest of my loaders. Not long after that I ended up selling the 410 Rem along with a 410/22 Savage I had. No way was I paying over $20 bucks a box for 410 ammo when I could buy 20 gauge for $6. I got a real short barrelled over and under in 20 gauge, made by Richo, with 14" barrels. It was light, very easy to pack, handy and worked great for grouse , deer and bear. I also bought a Baikal 22/20 gauge, which ios a great small game gun. Much longer and heavier though.

The Rem 100 was a great skeet gun, I put many thousands of rounds through it with no issues at all. It weighed about the same as a 20 gauge version. I would NOT shoot a bear with a 410 slug. That gun is effectively a noise maker. Bear spray would be far more effective.

All that said, If you are dead set on the 410 The Rem semi autos are a great choice at pretty reasonable prices.

Fly Theory

In case you are interested I noticed Londero Sports has a used Rem 1100LW (Light Weight) with 25" barrel for sale for $699. That would be a great buy on that particular gun, they were about $1,800 new.
