Default OLd Town Kayak Pedal Drive Question

I know a few members are avid kayak fisherman, so i have a question for them. To those that operate Old Town Pedal drive kayaks, have you ever had any issues with the pedal drives? On a few forums for Kayak fishing, people are always having issues from grinding noises to squeaking to hard pedelling. I am trying to decide if this is the route I want to go after reading this. Any input is appreciated. Thx!

Just got ours in January so got no real life intel yet!!!!
But that being said when I searched high and Low for a kayak the old town pdl system stood out above the rest for durability etc plus the 5 year warranty is awesome.
Some are in their kayaks 3 days a week fishing and have no issues and some have issues as with anything but the game changer is the warranty.
We put on the Navarre floating prop nut, drive spacers so the drive is always centred and got a spare prop too.
Just rotating the peddle by hand it is smooth as butter and effortlessly.
Could give you a better report at the end of the season but you will already have purchased a new kayak

The ones I’ve fished with seem loud to me. It’s had me looking around several times to see what the noise is…but I’m biased with my Hobie pedal drive, hands down the best drive on the market.
Call over to AQ outdoors in Edmonton and speak with Andy he will give you the goods and steer you in the right direction for your needs.

Yeah we went through AQ outdoors in Edmonton, great service and advice.

Kinda took input from a lot of kayakers especially ones who fish a many days out of theirs.

In fact just played around with the steering knob and got hold of NKF or Navarre and ordered the large steering knobs to eliminate totally the tension knob.

Good luck on your quest as it is very addictive

I got a sweet halibut spot if you want LOL

For the most part I find every kayak has a flaw. I've had my pedal crank arm strip on my PDL drive but it was replaced under warranty. (made of aluminium) This is a common problem. The good part is after warranty is done the crank arm can be purchased from any pedal bike store for dirt cheap in other materials.

My PDL has required some form of maintance or lube. (lots of saltwater usage)
Keep in mind Jackson pedal systems and hobies also squeek if not maintained.

Oldtown is also very good with honoring the lifetime warranty on the hull. if you sit down and it cracks under your seat. They will send you a whole new hull without the PDL. You must be the origional owner. (register the kayak)
My jackson kayak cracked under my butt and it was out of warranty.
As for hobie they went down hill after they got bought out by a private investor in early 2021. Many people try claiming warranty for a cracked hull and all the recieve in the mail is a patch kit.(google hobie warranty and watch some videos)

Wow those are beauty fish.
Nick from Navarre has two good videos on how to service the pedal drive system too.
Have not had our new yaks in the water yet but you would think by looking at them that we are pro’s with all the mods we put on.
Took us two years of research to make the jump to a pedal yak so now all I can say is fish beware.
Huy we need more vids!
