Default Scope recommendations

Recently bought a .257 ultralight. I’m not really into what I consider extremely long distance shooting but under the right conditions and a now or never shot I’d like to reach out to 500 yards. I’d pay the extra if I know I’m getting quality glass. Just looking for any recommendations. Thanks

The Swarovski Z5 3.5-18x44BRH is my own favorite, as I like a bit more magnification with my older eyes.

There are a bunch of scopes out now being tailored to the PRS game, FFP reticles up the ying yang if you like them, but they are more suited to the longer range stuff, not really for hunting, and there are also ones influenced by the FFP stuff in SFP. There will be a bunch more coming out at SHOT, may pay to spend some time learning about what gimmicks they are using and then making a decision. Been watching a lot of stuff on YT and reading various blogs There are some out there now in the 10-1500 range that are really well done, there is some sub10 stuff that is interesting as well. Athlon, Delta, Trijicon have new stuff coming, not to mention Vortex and Bushnell and Leupold. market is making them change the way they do stuff. There are a few out of Europe as well. Optics Trade.eu is very interesting to look at, and they show Cdn pricing, which is very close to what they are here, just take that model and search it in Canada. There are blogs like The Dark Lord of Optics with some interesting stuff. Market is swinging thru a big change by the look of it.

Another vote for a Swarovski but I would suggestive BRX reticle over the BRH. The BRH is too chunky for long shots.

I have several Z3 and Z5 with the BRX reticle. Excellent clarity and easy to see the fine reticle for quick shots.

I find the BRX too thin in low light conditions, which is why I went with the BRH.

I have two Z3's - love them. One on a 308 (42mm) and another on a 7mm (50mm).

Both are the BRH reticle - I took a whitetail at 355 yds in November and had no issues with the reticle at that distance. If you're looking at 500 yds I think the BRH is fine. That said, for ~$1000 try to look at both the BRH and BRX to be sure.

I too am a Swaro Fan. Personal favourite is the Swarovski Z5 3.5-18x44. At one pound even, it is a lot of scope for very little weight. Mine has the BRX but I agree with Elk, the older I get the more I am thinking I might switch to the BRH for low light. So far, even right at the end of legal light I can see the BRX fine but if that changes it is easy to get the reticle changed by Swaro or just switch scopes. The fine reticle is really nice for small targets or long range work.

Just don’t saddle your nice new ultralight with some heavy monstrosity...the Swaro Z3 or 5 series or the VX3i Leupolds are light and reasonably compact and will be suitable to 500 yds.

Trades I would interested in:

especially! with the HHR reticle. (no duplex pls.)
- older 6x fixed scopes with fine X or target dot.
