Chris,

Your are our Hero, great job. May the Almighty reward you with mighty trophy animals.

Now tell me how can I see the wmu #s on the google map? I can't see them or they are not there? I think you mentioned that you labeled them. Please advice.

If I understand what you are asking. You mean like a text label in the center of the WMU presented in GE? That is a good question, I don't know. It would be nice though. If I find a way I will update the next file to include it.

Default Would $ help?

New thought: Would it help at all to get the Garmin versions of these sorted out if I (and maybe a few others?) were to kick in say $20 to the effort so you would at least have beverages of whatever kind you like while doing the work? Just a thought, organize a Paypal address and I'll throw in. Or maybe not, either way thanks for sure! Bush maps are $250 and all I really want are the accurate WMU boundaries in my GPS along with the other maps I have in there already (and my topo program doesn't have the WMUs, plus some of the other stuff I've seen isn't at all accurate on the WMUs, yours are).

Thanks again, nicely done.

PS Thanks CAC! I can't even begin to imagine how long that took. PM me your address and I'll burn and send you a copy of a landowner map I have for 330 if you're interested.

Hey Guys,

I'm taking absolutely no credit for this, but I organized the file into numerical order and fixed the WMU 430, thing. The file can be found at:

http://www.tbeckett.net/images/KMU/Alberta WMU.kmz

Feel free to download it and I'll delete the file if CSC asks.

Cheers,

Hey mytylerb,

Great work!!!(replaced my places) DarkAisling was also looking at cleaning these up. I think there will be more editing to come as people start to use these. Now that you have it cleaned up and organized people could just edit the one off changes that come up.

I've been out looking for elk the last few days and haven't a chance to look at this much. I did find what I think is labeled Mt Kidd should be WMU 734, I think. Anyway it should be noted as "no hunting".

Here is the location for the raw data that was used to make the maps in GE.

http://www.altalis.com/prod_base_bound.html

I used GPS TrackMaker to convert them. (free)

http://www.gpstm.com/

Here are the instructions on making Garmin files.

http://www.gpstm.com/articles.php?article=3

All the software above is free.

Hopefully with all the data available we can have a bunch of board members cranking out maps.

Cheers,

Chris

I have played with it a bit, using the GIS software I have at work. I've accomplished little bits, and have had some success. My success are preceded by many failures I'm developing my plan of attack.

So, my goals are as follows:
  • Colour code the WMUs so they match the SRD map (Chris' idea)
  • Add labels (a few mentioned wanting this)
  • Code additional attributes into the data, so when one clicks on the WMU a variety of info is available (my idea)

Chris has been gracious and has provided the original shapefile (a "smart" GIS format) to me.

I'm reviewing the integrity (good for the most part) and the meta data of the original dataset, and I'll also be closely reviewing the feedback in this thread to see what users want. I will also be encompassing the changes that the other users have made to the dataset: any changes you make will not be lost, but as I'm working with the original dataset and not user edited sets I'll be redoing those edits.

When I'm done---which could take a couple of months or more, based on my present load at work . . . which is insane---I'll make the copy I'm working on available. It won't be a problem to make a .GPX file (Garmin/Map Source) available at the same time.

I don't see the data set I'm working on as a replacement for this one, but rather as an alternative for users who want a very robust data set. The data set I'm working on will be at least five times larger (it is 25 megs right now, and I have yet to code any attributes) and a bit bulky for some users, I imagine.

There's alot for your computer to process due to the fact it has has so many points its the same as when you open in Garmin mapsource after converting. Although I managed to take the original files from Altalis and modified them to work as a drawing not routes on my Garmin only issue I had was getting the zoom to go out past 1 km for the map as its doesn't allow anymore for the free program. I did manage to get another program and playing with it now to get it to zoom better. I have it set to just move your curser over the area and it tells you what zone your in. If you have a Garmin that can view more then one map it will work. Let me know and I can email it to you. You will have to turn off the map and view your base map to see more detail as its not transparent as of yet. I can help with installing it if you would like.

Default GPS Topo map

to save you some time and work on your garmin program....

i found this site last year and the program is awsome.

http://www.ibycus.com/ibycustopo/

if you follow the steps there you get a topo map for free that kicks the s**t out of the 150$ garmin ones. I like it anyways. this guy built them out of the department of natural resources maps. hope you all find these maps as useful as i do! i believe that this topo has all of canada as well!

thanks for the google Earth WMU's as well!

K

I have found a relatively easy way to add the maps to your Garmin GPS.

First download the file in above post for the Google Earth WMUs.

Then download Mapwel http://www.mapwel.eu/

You only need the demo version. It does tag all of the WMU info with "DEMO" (shown in pictures below)in front. If that's a problem try the free version then pay the $45 for the full so you don't have to see the tag.

Once you have the Googel KMZ file on your PC and Mapwel installed you can get started.

1. Open Mapwel.

2. In Mapwel open the KMZ file.

You will need to modify the properties of the file so it overlays properly with existing maps.

3. First select all the WMUs

4. Then right click on the list of maps on the right and select properties.

5. Then you will need to make the maps transparent. Click the box that says "Transparent Map" on the fourth tab of the properties on the right side of the window.

Now you are ready to load the map to your GPS.

6. Click on the "upload to GPS" tool bar icon on the top left.

7. The upload dialog will open. Make sure you select "add to existing maps" or it will overwrite all your existing data. The upload will take 30-40min. No big deal if you have your maps on your PC, you just will have to start again.(I did this the first time around)

The end result.

So all in all not to complicated. Obviously there is always a chance you can mess up your GPS. Only do this if you are comfortable and have your data backed up.

Cheers,

Chris
