Now..... I’m just gonna put this here...

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/...emocracies-die

I’d say that our norms started getting attacked back in 1990-93 when the Liberals started the full term campaign mode and dirty tricks nomination tactics.... Natural Governing Party indeed.......the conservatives have been excellent students of said tactics.

We are all suffering because of it.

I see it as linked directly to the Fairness Doctrine being repealed .... in the name of ‘free speech’.
Polarization has been around since The United States fought for independance from England. I'd think the American cival war was polarizing. Pretty silly to blame a president is responsible for it or it's a modern phenomenon.
The media now would be a good start in the blame game. Thankfully most people can see what the CNN and CBC are doing.

Completely agree about the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine. This has only been compounded since the age of the internet, and with so many versions of so-called media outlets at peoples fingertips, it will only get worse. Even worse is the spread of garbage via social media. I can't really recall in recent years seeing any honest/balanced reporting on controversial topics.

It takes two to tango. Nobody getting getting pulled onto the dance floor against their will. Media is simply a tool used by both “sides”.

I think it would be fair to say that very few places in the world have a true democracy. Most have varying degrees of oligarchy with a thin veneer of 'democracy' to keep the plebs satiated. Power always seems to be obtained through force and/or fraud. Force isn't always used, but in all my studies about governments, I've never found one that didn't come into power without fraud.

Finding the fraud in the founding can lead to a great amount of immunity from the stupidity of the government in the later stages of the cycle of governments.
