He stopped to take a look!
I will begin by saying I am primarily a meat/method hunter and horns are considered a bonus.
2nd day of a 3 day hunt up in the Broken Paddle area north of Smith; my brother recently bought a lake lots there. I was having terrible luck this season and nothing seemed to be going right... always the wrong location which was later confirmed by trial cam photos.... even wrong tool choice as I ran into a moose in the strathcona bow zones and had decided to carry the shotgun as oppose to my bow.
This hunt seemed to be going the same way and after sitting all day on a trial I finally had a chance at a doe but another hunter came along on a quad and the opportunity was ruined (not his fault, he had no knowledge I was there.)
At 4 pm I decided to head to camp as I had a nasty mud hole to go through and I wanted to make it to the other side in day light; I was alone as my brother already returned to camp with a doe. As I quadded out and not 150 yards from where I was sitting, I spotted a doe in a cut block looking right at me. My first thought was if I had stayed put on the trial she would have crossed right in front of me.
I let the quad roll to a stop and she didn't run. What the heck, I might as well give it a try, what did I have to lose. So, I got off the quad and surprisingly she didn't run. I loaded my rifle and she didn't run. I pointed the rifle at her and she didn't run. Oh, I forgot to mentioned there was less than 30 feet between me and the doe. The 7mm barked and she kicked and ran down out of sight and into a low spot. All of a sudden she bolted out the other side "How the heck did I miss?" Wait a minute, that deer has antlers. I chambered another round and followed the buck in my scope as he ran away saying to myself "stop and look" "stop and look" ..... and what do you know, he did.
I took a hard quartering away shot at 180 yards (ranged later) and made perfect shot entering behind his last left rib and exiting behind the right front should; almost no meat lost. Funny part is that the doe went 50 feet and the buck only went about 20. Texted my brother to come back out and we made it through the mud hole and a heck of a sleet storm back to camp.
This is my biggest deer since 2010 and might be the biggest 4x4 I will ever take.
