You should be able to do splits with those you have.

Just so y'all know...
The Alberta Bee Act regulates beekeeping in Alberta. Anyone offering used beekeeping equipment for sale (especially supers and frames) must have a permit to do so from Alberta Agriculture and Food. Anyone purchasing such equipment must inform the Provincial Apiculturist of this purchase within 15 days. Anyone owning bees or used beekeeping equipment in Alberta, or operating bees in Alberta is required to register annually with the Provincial Apiculturist.

You can't swing a dead cat in the Peace without hitting a beekeeper.
The peace imports gazillions of bees every spring.
Ask around, and you may be able to get in on the action.

Speaking of Bees, I have 1.5 acres of cultivated Wildflowers ( 53 varieties) with lots more native varieties in the area. There is a good water source nearby and lots of trees around as well. If anyone in the Parkland area is interested in placing a few hives here, I'm open.

Bee Maid in Spruce Grove will have thes. Note when ordering, that at Bee-Maid most call this size "Shallows".

Only if you are bringing bees and equipment from another province.

I think a short drive to Falher and a coffee shop will end your quest

Just so you know there is a quarantine in place for bees and hives to the south east of peace river due to one beekeeper who thought he knew better and illegally imported some hives with small hive beetles. If they decide to lift restrictions before you find yourself some bees I could probably sell a hive or two.
Hopefully I can make a link work here, if it does there is more information about it including a map. http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$departm...f/all/prm13239

Hi Beeman I thought they lifted the quarantine? A beekeeper I know in peace had put some hives into that area before the infected hives were brought in and they let him take them out last fall. Definitely interested if you could part with a couple hives. Thanks..... Robin

Man, I'd be really careful about used equipment, especially from someone who doesn't currently have bees. If their colony was knocked out by AFB and they didn't realize it, you bring THAT home.........
Watch your hives go up in smoke!
I don't know what Alberta has for disease control/inspections but I'd be sure it was provincially inspected colonies and equipment with clean history.
I'm in Manitoba so I know our system.

Whoa, self-correction!
Bee-maid won't carry 8-frame supers.
You'll need to order from the states.
But 8-frame is overhyped crap.

I am also in Manitoba. Lots of beekeepers in your area from what I have seen when elk hunting. Find a bigger commercial operation and ask if you can buy a couple 4-5 frame nucs. Get them installed by mid May with at least 3 full frames of brood and they should produce a decent size crop. The most economical route was already mentioned; Split your own existing colonies. Nucs are running around $170-200 here in southern MB.
