Default ATC for Trap line

Guys working on my ATC for trapline. I have completed the documents, looking in to skill testing. Anyone got tips and suggestions beside lots of shooting practise. Also suggestions for individuals/ranges qualified to do testing in Edmonton area.

Passed and now qualified. Pistol must be in a locked box with trigger lock when traveling in truck, riding on quad or snowmobile. Only time I can carry it in a holster is when walking to traps. Holster must be around waist and totally visible. No shoulder holsters. Very limited.

We decided to not get atc on our line, to much trouble

We use rossi or henry ranch hands in 357 or 44 mag
Also know as mares legs,
non restricted and very short, no ATC to carry needed, lots of leg and back holsters around for them

For dispatch gun I pack a chiappa little badger in 22, folds in half, non restricted , weights like 2 pounds

Steve McQueen used a mares leg back in the day

Little badger

Default Atc

TrapperMike, was the restriction to carry for dispatch 22 handgun or for a 357 magnum for protection. It would never make any sense if a handgun was locked up other than dispatch. I can agree with transport to line in locked case. Why would they recommend a type 1 holster for carry.

Just another point I cannot imagine checking 50 traps in a day and unlocking cased handgun each time, going beyond silly! Nube how did you make out on your ATC you were working on a while back, any restrictions?

They still can't seem to issue me a RPAL let alone to the next step.....
They sure like to take their time. They made the phone calls necessary after I gave them crap for taking so long within a couple days. (Over a month it was in their hands) Now I sit and wait and it has been well over 2 months now. They sure didn't hesitate to charge the credit card after the first week they had it.
If I have to have it locked while on my skidoo while on my line I will say forget it and find another way to pack a gun around. That sounds rediculous you can't holster a pistol and go for a skidoo ride. Traveling in a vehicle I understand

Decided to go the mares leg route as well
A 22 for dispatch and a 357 in a leg holster...

I think a guy should apply and get a ATC to send Ottawa a message but in actual fact it's more a pita with the rules that go along with it.

22 for dispatch. I was told if I had twenty snares set along a two mile trail that I checked on my quad or snowmobile I would have to put pistol in locked box with a trigger lock installed attached securely to quad as I traveled from snare to snare.

That's the problem. If you're on foot you're good.

Dammit guys, the more this is beat around the bush, the more restrictions will be imposed. I've had mine for 15 yrs. and there was never this sh## at that time..The only ones who were in the know were the RCMP. At that time, permits were only issued for protection, not dispatch...Give you head a shake felllas, as already mentioned ---what good is protection if stowed away.
Honestly ----keep up this BS and see where it all ends IMHO

Sourdough, I wish you were right, we just ignore changes already on the books then everything is just fine on our trap lines.

BGW, I PMed contact info. I'm not sure, check it out yourself, but I think any RPAL tester can do the ATC proficiency test.

As per the new ATC Application Package Effective January 16, 2017:

"The proof of proficiency has been updated with new requirements for the administrator and new scoring methodology. The administrator for the proof of proficiency must now hold a valid Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) for restricted firearms at the time of administration AND who is a range safety officer OR a member of an approved shooting range executive OR is an instructor for a recognized firearms course or discipline."

For my proficiency test all I had to do was get another person who had a possession permit for a pistol. We did the test for each other and both have our carry permits now.

What is the final word now with the new rules?

Can I carry a dispatch pistol in a holster on my hip (unloaded) while driving a ATV checking traps?

Or does it need to be locked while driving the ATV and only on the hip when walking to check ?

Default ATC for trapline

Finally got approved for trapline. It is now very involved process. Need to be able to shoot like "Billy the Kid" lots of documents and very thorough interview by CFO officers.

Have restrictions changed. Can you carry it in your holster on Atv, snow machine or in your truck.

Anyone know? Can it be unloaded and holstered while using a ATV/sled? Or does it need to be locked up?

Unloaded and holstered in an approved holster while on an atv or horse. In a truck, unloaded, trigger locked and in a locked case, just like when you travel to the gun range from your home.
