Duck decoy weights
Getting a full decoy set made up, just curious what weights most guys use. Is 3 oz enough, or go with the 6 oz?
TIA

How deep and how windy?
3 oz will move in a heavy wind with a deep set. Once it lifts off bottom the decoy is gone to deep water.

Well, hopefully not more than 5 ft of water, and the usual wind. If I'm using a longer line, just lets them move more? ie-5 ft line in 3 ft of water

These work really well for me, I can't see much point in using anything else.

I would recommend getting Texas Rigs, not sure if thats already what you had in mind or not.

They are exactly what I would like, just having trouble finding the right set up.
Nothing but bad reviews for these, but is what I'm looking for

trouble with decoy line length is you can't easily change it in the future. Suddenly you are tossing decoys from a boat, and it is deeper than 3 feet, then what?
I hate tangles as much as any one. The heavy plastic cord material does not tangle (hence tangle free). Go 6 - 7 ft long and worry free for future years when you may change things up.
The tangle free weights that move in one direction are also very nice for wrapping up a spread of blocks.
Try 5 ounce for a weight. Look for the "slip weight" that is part of the tangle free system. the J style is fine but it does get bent and breaks, as does the older flat style that are supposed to bend over the decoy head or keel. Once broken off, the weight is useless.
If you get deeper water, and a wind, you will be much happier with more weight and a longer line.
I have added a few decoys to my spread over the years from ones I have found that blew off someone's spread from somewhere. It does happen.

We used one or two old spark plugs as the weights. They don't tangle and they don't cost anything. We also put 10' of line on and a notch in the bottom of the rail or used the built in hook some had on the decoy so you could tie your rope at what ever length you wanted, just tie a large loop in the string. You can also use line locks for fast and easy length adjustment.

I've used a 1/2" X 8" strip of plumbing lead.
Wrap the string up and wrap the lead around the decoy head to prevent tangling when in the bag.
Never had the decoys move in hang winds.
