Default Best fly rod for the right amount

Hello all, thanks for having me.

I love fly fishing and I'm wondering what is the best rod for the right amount...I have 300$ and know it's not much in the fly fishing world; But I do need something better this year.

any inputs will be appreciated.

Pak

For $300, bvk would win my vote. Have a 3 wt and loving it.

I agree with BVK (it's what I use), but IIRC, it'll run more than the OP's $300. My buddy fishes with Grey's rods, and really likes them -- I haven't used them personally, but would trust his judgment any day of the week.

I would suggest Temple Fork Outfitters - IMO a great bang for the buck.

For $150 you can get a good rod that casts well. Then you have that much left for reel and line.

Do you guys with BVKs have problems with the sections coming apart while you are casting?

Yep, both my TFO rods have had that problem. So far my fix has been just to push it together tighter but I'm sure others have better solutions

I have absolutely no problem with my bvk 8ft 3wt. Paired with sage 4200 and airflo super dri. It did better than my expectation of distant and accuracy. Veery happy for the $300 I spent.

Bvk!! Have a 6wt and 3wt. Love them both. The six is great battling windy days. Never had my rods come apart casting. I have a Grey's 5wt which I also like a lot.

Yes I have had this problem with my 5wt BVK and it can be quite annoying but I try to check the connections every once and a while. One day last summer I was casting and the second section came loose mid cast and cracked. I took it in and they gave me a new section for free no questions asked.

Thanks all,

Pak

Why limit yourself? If I can get in a couple of extra inches I will always do so!

Wax the ferrules with paraffin (regular candle wax) Helps to keep sections together as well as helping to prevent sticking.

I'd stay away from paraffin wax. It can build up in spots at ferrules and cause breakage.

Rather use electrical tape, this will prevent twist and sections will not come loose.

Why would anyone fish with rod that does not perform properly?

Wax isn't enough...sticking NEVER an issue.
Tape is not advised by manufacturers and seems so convenient for every trip out.
Epoxy refinishing is in order I guess

I use the BVK in 4 and 6 wt and love them both. Set the joints by pushing them together and rotating about 90 degrees to line up the guides - should never come loose but they do get better with age as they wear in just a little.

Default Lefty Kreh

I bought a couple from The Fishing Hole which I liked, both were Lefty Kreh fly rods.

I went with the 5 Wt. 8 1/2 Ft. for trout for 125.00 and the 8 Wt. 9 Ft for salmon I think it sold for about $160.00. Both of them were pretty nice for the price.

Really???

The Loon graphite wax is good too, whatever wax you use, make sure you clean both and male and female ends before waxing.

Are you close to Calgary? If wax is not enough to prevent the sections from coming apart, take the rod back to TFO and get a replacement section that fits better. TFO has one of the best warranties in the business.

A loose ferrule usually clicks and may even start coming apart if you wiggle the rod vigorously, just something to check before buying any rod.
