Default Berkley Vanish?

Has anyone else had a bad experience with this. My dad came up ans we went on a fishing trip for wallys and jack. We caugh lots but the line snapped all the time...

Checked the leader, pulled off a few feet and retied...same thing. I was pretty unimpressed?

What are your favs for line?

Berkely Fireline Crystal. Its kind of expensive @25.00 per spool but very tough and thin, doesn't get all kinky like regular line. Found it to be the best. Give it a try and you will never go back.

Mono - Berkley Sensation - clear or green
Braid - Fireline - Crystal or HiVis green
Fluorocarbon - Berkley 100%, and I ONLY use it for leaders, I'd never spool with it.

I use the Berkley XT as well for tying leaders, lindys and spinners.

I like to use vanish line. Its got very good abrasion strength. As with most lines if your catching fish with teeth you could have 200 lb line its gonna snap unless you have a leadder on it.I never once had an issue with my reel lined with vanish line.I know you got to tie your knots a little bit diffrently as the knots seem to almost slip. But once you get your knots right your in business.

I use it all the time for leader/tippet with my fly rod/reel. I also use it for spin fishing and I haven't had a problem with it yet. I have bought bad spools of line though, and if they've been in sunlight for a long time, throw it away.

Make sure you lube you knots before you cinch them up, cause the heat caused will weaken the line. You can go a little bigger with Flourcarbon, since its less visable then Mono. Use an improved clinch knot, with lots of spit and give your spool some 'tug tests'. I use 10lbs for Eye's, but 14-15 would work fine also.

Power pro ultra-strong braided SpectraŽ Fiber RED. MY FAVORITE! I've caught well over 50 fish on this all in one week. It works like a charm. I can fell everything on it also. Never has broke on me yet and as for fraying, I haven't even noticed any yet. I check everytime I catch a fish.

I must of had a bad batch or some I mean 90 lb line shouldnt snap as easily as this junk did. So I got it re spooled . I sent away a letter saying I like there product sent me a spool of line and I re spooled my reel Ive yet to use the line. I use the heavy line for trolling , sturgeon fishing , and Big game fishing , Pike , musky , catfish.

But power pro line is good stuff . I find that the berkley line cuts in alot more then the power pro does.

I've never had a problem with it. No snaps no nothing. Pulled in a 13 pound Pike the other day and it worked like a charm. I layered it like they suggested on the box over some monofiliment line and tied it together. It casts beautifully, doesn't cut into the real and doesn't stretch. Love it.

If you read my post , I have never had problems with the power pro other then line snapping when making casts . Anyway whatever . Theres zero stretch with Braided line . And if it is spooled properly , it works alot better then if you dont follow the instructions set out by the company . Ive caught some pretty big fish on this new rod reel combo with this new line . Caught a huge sturgeon , but as it was about 20 feet from shore I got snagged and it jumped and snapped the line .

Default Mono

If there is a bigger scam than this line BS I dont know what it would be ...

Trilene XL is all I have ever used for as long as its been out $6.99

300 yds .. We use to get miles of it free on the walleye trails .....

Low memory , reasonable stretch .... always take off 4 ft. or

so every day....

Baitcasting 30 lb coated dacron , indestructable .....you can use the summer stuff for ice fihing .... wont rot ..

You gotta take your hat off to Berkley , they know how to run a spin .

My expiernce with vanish fluorcarbon has been on the postive as i have been usuing it close to ten years and being that it is invisable in light conditions my catch rates have inproved 20 to 30 percent over mono filament line....i have had very limited breaking as i change my tippet(i only use it as tippet on my fly line) quite often as i find the line frays quite easy from the fish's teeth and if i am fishing brookies or browns i even change more often...i look at for the little bit of hassle of changing tippet often but improving fish numbers i will take it..........i always fish these lakes with #8 test as it is supose to be invisable so i have no problem with that high of line thickness........i find that your leader should be around 8 or 9 feet if it gets shorter then the fly line spooks them.

The only berkley line I like is fire line.. but I haven't tried ALL their lines..

best mono line ever was a brand called silver threat AN-50!!! there was a Canadian fishin show called "fishin Canada" that used to push it alot.. I tried it and it was amazing.

Yeah, I''ve had a problem with the one and only spool of Vanish. Used it for fly tippet and spinning gear leader. Seemed like great value at the time. Broke way easier than comparable mono, maybe it was a bad batch or it was old. Gave that up and bought the (ouch!) expensive tippet spools of FC. Even these weakened after a few years so I chucked 'em had to shelled out $$$ for new spools. Maybe the heat in the vehicle kills them.

Other Berkley products are fine. I used Trilene for my light spinning, Big Game for sal****er and Fireline for when I need to let out a lot of line. But no Berkley in my flyfishing arsenal.

Do yourself a favour and try some of the new lines out there. You might change your mind on the whole "scam" theory. Besides, in the grand scheme of fishing, it's a cheap experiment, and what have you got to lose.

It's like vehicles, sure just about anything will get you to work, but some will do it a lot better than others, and excel different conditions.

You're really missing out if you only use Trilene XL...

Default New lines

Waxy make a suggestion for 8lb. test for jiggin walleyes

and I will try it .. Every time I go to No-sale sprts . I cant talk to anyone who has personal experience with line ...

For Jiggin and Lindy riggin I like a soft stretchy line ...

I will tell you why . almost no memory but after a day of the above presentation pretty twisty ...Let 40 ft or so out behind the boat at full speed
and out comes all the twisty got that from the Lindner brothers 30 yrs ago .....I like a little stretch when fishin big fish deep
cushions a bit ... I always ask my partners what they are using , how
long its been on the reel ... I fish with a guywho works at a tackle store and
and gets the latest and greatest , so I get to see it in action ...

All I am saying is best bang for your buck is still the tried and true ..
A reel full of line in the sun is still only good for one season maybe .....

I opened a pack of vanish 8lb. and broke a piece off , thats not good

XL you still have trouble breaking it off when snagged ( 8 lb. )

I caught my Catfish specialist ( 5) over 20 lbs out of the Red River
Man ..biggest over 35 with 6 ft rod and 8 lb. test XL

Check with big Bad John on here about the fightability there ...

But again tell me what I am missing and I will try it ...

I have fished with a few Berkley Factory guys and gotten the skinny on line ,

thought i would add that any small nicks in vanish will cause it to brake. Also thought i sould add that u must have mosture when your tieing a knot or it will heat up and be extremly weakened. Best way to use vanish and other flourcarbon is to just use them for leaders.

I'm not a chemist or line scientist, but I don't think Flurocarbon's features are its super strength. I can Barely snap 10 lbs with a hard tug, yet its smaller then 4lbs mono so its not over kill at all. I use 10lbs for dry fly leaders, thats how light it is.

Don't be afraid to use some 15-20 lbs where you would use a 8-10 lbs mono. Without a doubt theres no "need" for fluro, and its pretty pricey in comparison, yet for fly leaders you want low vis line. Jigging minnows in a "pea-soup" lake is not the place for Vanish. Pike will ignore wire leaders so fluro is a waste in most conditions.

I went fishing for Walter in the first week of June, and the water was so clear that the Vanish was well worth the double cost.

Tight Lines

Default Check line diameter

When comparing different mono lines for strength, be sure to check the line diameter. On some manufactures you will find that there line diameter may be .001-.002 thousands thicker than other manufactures with the same lb test line, so of course the line will be stronger. I can't recall exactly now, but 8lb mono on most manufactures used to be about .009.This was a few years back, I am not sure if it still happens now, as I have not used mono line for about 5 years now. I do use flourocarbon (not vanish though) for tying rigs and leaders.

I have fished with a few Berkley Factory guys and gotten the skinny on line ,
I'm far from a pro, and I've never fished with any factory reps, but here's my $0.02...

I'm a HUGE fan of Fireline. I use it all the time, for just about everything -

Strength - Fireline (or a similar braid like Power Pro, which I don't like as much, too hard on guides and reels) gives unmatched strength and durability. For a comaprison, when dealing with mono, anytime I want to cut it after tying, I just use my teeth, easy as can be, up to 20lb test or more. Just try doing that with Fireline, it's impossible, you need special scissors to cut the stuff. I can't see it being any different for fish teeth. Same thing goes for trying to break knots or the line, in my experience, you have cut bad snags with Fireline, where as, 95% of time, you can break off a mono snag.

Sensitivity - The other huge advantage to Fireline is it's unmatched sensitivity. I generally jig with the 6/2 or 8/3 Fireline in either crystal or green. In real clear water or finnicky bites, I'll use a 4-6ft 100% fluorocarbon leader to help reduce line visibility. The feel you get from fireline can't be matched by any mono, it's like you can "read" the bottom and differentiating bites is far easier when jigging or lindying.

Visibility - I love the green Fireline for visibility when jigging or lindy rigging. It's so much easier to see those slight twitches or slack in the line, or see the line paying out faster/slower than boat speed, etc...

Diameter - the smaller diameter of the fireline helps with sensitivity, but really makes a difference in getting bouncers and cranks down to deeper depths with less line out, and using less weight - both very good things. It's also an advantage with jigs - lighter jigs can be used and produce that slow drop that seems to be the key to triggering fish when fishing vertical.

Stretch - To each his own, there's no right answer, but I love the low stretch. I like to feel that direct connection, I can't stand a limp noodle rod, and limp noodle line is just as bad. There is a learning curve though, you have to change the way you fish - no more made for TV "Bob Izumi hooksets" - you'll lose far more fish than you'll hook that way. A firm, single motion, sweeping application of pressure is all you need. You don't have to overcome the line stretch to set the hook, just tighten it.

Memory - essential zero. Fireline continues to amaze me at how little memory it has and how little it twists. Don't overfill the spool and you're good to go. The same trick works to get any twist out though.

Mono still has it's place, but I've converted a few "mono" friends of mine that fish the SWT to Fireline in the last couple years, and they haven't looked back.

As for mono, I use the Sensation. To my mind, it's better all around than the XL, but it also has a higher price tag. It's up to the individual if they think it's worth it. I'd only suggest spooling up one XL and one Sensation and try them back to back, I did, and I now use the Sensation. Pretty small $$$ difference in the big picture of fishing.

I use either the XT or 100% Fuoro for spinner rigs and lindy snells. The VAST majority of the time when I get a break off or snag, the spinner/snell will break off and I'll reel in the weight - it's tied on with Fireline.

Fireline 8-3
Sensation 8

Like I said, I'm no expert, just my personal observations...

Waxy

I've done well with Vanish in 6lb for perch. Managed a 4 pound eye one time but the hook was on the tip of its lip. Soon as those teeth make contact with it "snap".

I like flouro alot for its "refractive index", its very similar to water which makes it hard for the fish to see. But in low pound tests I find it is weak stuff, if you get into the 20- 30 lb stuff thats where this stuff realy shines

I'm a big fan of the fireline crystal. Also have done well with the red power pro. Right now I'm trying out the Ugly Braid and have been impressed so far.
