Default Coyote/fox with a bow?

I want to shoot a coyote or a fox with my bow and was wondering if any one has done this consistently? I have ideas on how to go about it but new ideas could help!

Sitting long enough in your stand/blind you'll get a chance.

But if you want action, set up over a gut pile or a slaughtered farm animal, you'll be busier than a one legged man in a kicking contest !

What's the best way to set up over the dead animals? Ground blind or elevated stand?

Default coyotes

Like potty mouth said sitting in a stand on a good game trail hunting big game often gives you plenty of opportunities. But if predators is what your after sitting on meat scraps or dead animal will give you some good results. Look for a pig farmer in your area because lots of animals get tossed out back and coyotes will be plentiful.

Default coyotes

Just like hunting any other species keep the wind in your favor, get elevated, or break your outline up with a home made blind or store bought. They will pick up your scent or movement the most. Wait to draw when there heads down or facing the other way. some are dumb some are smart been picked out in a tree stand and barked at while have easily snuck into bow range of one that's preoccupied with a mouse or meal..

Yotes see differently than deer do so even in a treestand it can be tricky. Unlike deer, yotes will see any movement and look up in the tree even if they are only looking straight ahead. They have amazing peripheral vision and you'll have to make any movement/draw only when they look away from your stand. GL

Well that makes it sound simple enough but from my experience deer hunting it won't be! But i will have to give that a try and see how it works out!

Try calling them it might be tough to draw without them seeing you but you can get them in under 30yds a lot of the time, I take them with a shotgun sometimes.

There are all kinds of electronic calls available now and have recently become legal in Alberta for Coyotes. Some you pay an arm and a leg for others are rather afordable, take a trip down to Whole Sale Sports and pick one out, Electronics take all the work out of it so you don't have to be good.

My friend has a "power dog" electronic call but I have been told that it's a joke! Is that true?

I shot a yote with my bow a few years back, from a tree stand, while hunting deer, shot my pope and young buck from the same stand, a week later,

I shot this guy from the ground last October. He was 47 yards out standing broadside and watching me. He never moved....until my arrow passed though him. About 20 yards later he was still again.

Default coyote / fox with a bow

I've shot 3 of them from treestands while deer hunting. I carry a small squeeze type varmint call with me, and when I see one I start calling. 2 were right under the tree, and the other one was @ 12 yards. A soft mouse squeeker does the trick for me.

I only took one this past year with the bow from a ground blind... more like a snow blind.

I have shot them from treestands and out my front and back doors.

I have called them with distresses, howls, hell even sucking on my hand to make squeaks worked.

Movement is the single biggest thing you need to consider, they have very keen eyesight. Draw slow and controlled and straight back.

I have shot the most over bait, once they are there let them feast for a bit, no rush on taking the shot. They got a free meal where are they going to go?

I tend to find that calling in teams works best, yotes like to circle down wind, especially if they don't have eyes on a prize. Try to catch them as they swing round before they catch your wind, works like a damn when you got a boom stick

Or just set up behind cover with a shooting lane on a natural pathway and eyes further up the trail and just wait.

The powerdogs do work but not the best, the foxpro's work amazingly. For mouth calls Id try a few and see what you can make work the best not everyone can make the same call sound good, I like the ruffydog calls, and the sceery calls but the ruffys are hard to use. Spend the money on the foxpro you wont regret it. The nice part about the electric with remote is you can set it upwind and when the dogs circle downwind they walk right into you, you can try a electric rabbit decoy too they make the dog focus on that and you have a little more forgiveness in your movements.

In late Aug - Sept the pups are on thier own and way easier to get. Make sure you use broadheads or they run off with your arrow. I have a hard time shooting Foxs and cuss mice. shoot a coyote and save 10 deer.

No they wont be coming in yet, youll be getting the ones worried about their pups. That distress works most all the time its kinda the go to call for me anyway. pups have only been out of the den for 3 or 4 weeks I seen a bunch by my place a month ago and they were still wobbly in the knees

like said above late aug or sept they seem to be just a little behind right now but around that time you will get some real dumb ones. Careful though there has been some massive debates on here about shooting yotes this time of year on this forum LOL .... my yote season still goes year long though, good luck let us know how you make out
