Default Coyote problem...

I know this has probably already been covered somewhere, but I was wondering if someone could give me a quick answer.

We have a bit of a coyote problem out here in Manitoba. I live about 30 minutes out of Winnipeg in an area where it is legal to discharge rimfires and shotguns, but not centerfires.

Just wondering what would be best for thinning out the population of these critters, legally. My personal opinion is that at .22 is not going to give me a humane kill, and I have no idea what load would be best in a shotgun. What would you recommend?

Buckshot or slugs. Why no centerfire ammo?

I wish I knew...been that way for years.

Having never fired buckshot before, what kind of choke should I be using, and what kind of range should I expect to get?

Could also upgrade to a .22 mag.
I have a buddy who is a predator calling nut who swears by it with the 30 or 33 gr (im not sure of gr) v-max.

That's the biggest problem. The 'yotes never come into our yard, they hang out in the neighbors pasture and are desimating the local deer population. My neighbor has given a big green light to taking them out on his property, but doesn't want anything that will be a problem for his pets or livestock.

Besides, shooting them would be more fun.....

Never fired buckshot either so i cant help you. Slugs will get to about 100 yards and if you get a rifled barrel they are very accurate. Start working on you calls to, cause it can be really effective. however when we shoot em we use a 7mm and can really reach out and get em.

Shooting might be more fun.....have you ever tried snaring ?? It's pretty interesting on its own. Set up a bait away from pets/livestock and snares are operational 24/7.

I don't believe by hunting them you will be successful enough to solve any problems.

pyrenees or miramars work well also. Our pair of miramars have killed plenty of yotes.

I am assuming you would be allowed to fire black powder firearms in which case the new ones are quite accurate and definitely overkill

Read buckshot good for around upto 40 yards, some goose shot for around 20 yards.

Been trying to find some 20 gauge buckshot around here but having trouble finding anyone who has it in stock.

I second that....I recently bought a CZ 17 HMR from a local guy who used it as a coyote calling rifle...he said out to about 125 yards headshots were the way to go....

HEVI-shot Dead Coyote shotgun shells claim 100% pattern @ 40 yards and lethal knock-down patterns at 70+ yards. with 20 T-shot (.20 cal) sized pellets. Bass Pro, among others, sells them.
