Post open water boat fishing near Edmonton in April (now)

Hi there,

I am tagging along on my wifes work trip to Edmonton next week. I would like to bring my boat and get out and do some open water fishing. I would appreciate any advice on lakes near Edmonton with good boat fishing. Any species Trout, pike walleye. I have a 25hp motor not sure if there are restrictions on motors?

If anyone wanted to join me id be more than happy to take you out in exchange for your local knowledge.

Thanks in advance.

No open water around Edmonton unless you want to launch in river and dodge icebergs.

Oh really? Ops I'm from New Zealand so not up to play with this stuff. Thanks for the quick reply, I really appreciate it.

What about fishing from the shore anywhere?

Only the river and there is ice being flushed through right now. A few spots you could try but don't expect good fishing.

If you are only here for a few days I would find a better way to spend your time. Fishing won't really ramp up here until May especially the way our ice and weather is right now.

Thanks again, really helpful. Might have to spend some "quality time" with the wife.

Not that there's anything wrong with spending quality time with the wife but..........if you have a time to go for a 3- 5 hour drive there is open water south of Edmonton.

Bow river and a few lakes further South should be open.

Some of you southern Albertans chime in.

HAHAHAHAHAHA I hear you. Ok thanks so much for the advice I will definitely look into this! A work mate of mine actually mentioned bow river, I have a larger boat but also a 12ft inflatable with a 20hp. I'm thinking ill bring the inflatable and try my luck.

I cant get over how helpful people are here thanks again!!

Yes but the ice just started flowing too. Fishing has been fairly slow but might get a walleye, pike or burbot.

Also not sure if you checked forecast or not but depending what days you are here will probably be near freezing with clouds and possible rain/snow...

Standing on the muddy bank of the NSR right now would not be high on my list of things to do. Especially if you have to buy an AB license to do it.
