Default Fly fishing Goldeye on the NSR

I've never fished Goldeye and I'm looking to try it out. Any advice on spots in or around Edmonton would be greatly appreciated! Or maybe some tips on what kind of flies they like? Thanks in advance!

You will want to look for spots where the current is slower and the water is deep. The fishing seems to be better near Fort Saskatchewan, but there are lots of spots in the city.

I have caught goldeye on minnows, jigs and spoons. So my guess for a fly would be a small clouser minnow or small streamer. If you are lucky they might be rising for surface insects.

Haven't done it yet but I'm looking to this year. Only reason I haven't already is there are no goldeye under 2 hours from where I live.

I've heard they quite readily hit hoppers and big foam stones, but if that doesn't work you could fish a black wooly bugger on a sink tip and probably hit some in the deep pools as mentioned.

Best place ever is the eddy immediately upstream of the cloverbar generating station across from hermitage park.

We spent a lot of time fishing there years ago! I'm not sure about parking access anymore as the generating station fenced us out a long time ago. I should go for a drive, I guess!

Default Depends on the time of year

i was fly fishing the red deer on a float trip. As i took a break from stripping streamers I tossed a stimulator (12) out for giggles and ended up catching 8 in about 15 minutes. As an added bonus a very big pike make a move on one of my struggling fish. Made me realize that i needed to use a much bigger streamer if i wanted to land a big pike. they are a fun fish to catch.

I would only fish them with dry flies, personally.
