Default Black or Grizz?

This guy's got me guessing.. Is he a big black or a small grizz? I've never noticed a hump like that on black bears.

I'll post the location of the photo once a few guesses come in, just so it doesn't influence your decision like it has mine...

Check that. Im going black. I didn't check the side profile pic very close and was going by the width of the head in the first pic.

I'm going with black bear. The head is what gives it away to me.

Brizzly. The hump says griz, but the face is black bear.

Shoulder hump = griz

Face profile is less pronounced, but also griz - look where the nose meets the rest of the head. Its not straight.

This is my guess too. The hump made me say grizzly right away but the second picture looks like a black bears head but there is a slight shovel. So my vote is grizz.

Great feedback! I wanted this to be grizz because the photo was taken south of Slave Lake on Highway 2 just a few weeks ago. We have tonnes of blacks around there, but it would create quite a buzz if a grizz made it that far east.

Sorry Gem, but despite your wishes and the views of a few of our members here that is a black bear. Send me the GPS co-ordinates of it and I will head up there this fall and happily put my general black bear tag on him.
Cheers.

I'd say Grizz due to the hump, but the face looks black. Still going with Grizz. Maybe its a Hybrid....

Yup. Hump hunting maybe! Not a hump on that bear. 3rd pic elkdump posted is a grizzly hump!

Heres a couple good profiles of a grizzly that shows the difference.
