I think it will be a good upland year in general.
At least in central.
We had the right kind of spring and I'm seeing lots of birds including Huns where I've never seen them before.

Barring any natural disasters it's going to be phenomenal in the south country.

There are going to be way more hunters in the areas that are pin pointed in this thread....The AO Red Carpet field entry.

Default Sharpie Heaven

Last year while deer hunting north of Oyen we saw 'chickens' like I only remember seeing as a kid in southern Sask. back in the 70's. Large flocks & no shortage of them in any direction. Coyote no's were also as high as I've ever seen! So I know where I'm going in Oct. this year for a few days. Hopefully the winter & spring weren't too harsh for the sharpies either.

I had a flock of sharpies on my front lawn last week. Mama and 5 young ones. I flushed a flock of 18 last fall in the ditch in front of my house and another flock of 9 to the west of my place.

Any recent sharp-tailed grouse eyewitness reports? I am looking for opportunities for a young lab to work on flushing birds

Thanks

I assume you are not hunting in Alberta! The Alberta Season is October 1-31 in selected WMUs, not province wide. The only exception is the Wainwright hunt, Sep 2-4.

I have seen Sharptails as far north as Indian Wells, as far south as Police Outpost and the Wild Horse area, all up the Alberta Saskatchewan border to Whitney Lakes Provincial Park, and as far west as 30 miles east of Cadomin. Some years the numbers are insane. My best single flock is over 70 birds north of Red Earth Creek last year.

Vic you are absolutely right. For some reason I had the 15th on the brain. Glad I haven't been out the last few days passing up sharpies!! Lol
