Hey guys, am a novice fisherman and looking for help identifying this fish. It was caught and released from a lake here in Alberta. Any help is appreciated!

I've never personally caught one, so I'm not saying this with total confidence, but I'm thinking bull trout.

I'm no expert either but I'd say looks more like a splake due to the forked tail. Knowing where abouts it was caught would definitely help though as there aren't many lakes that ever had splake in Alberta.

Bull. In any waters that have bulls look at the top fin if there is no black spots it is a bull and must be put back and kept healthy.

Bulls more often than not, have a slightly forked tail and not flat like the (antinomically incorrect) illustration in our Alberta Fishing regulations.

The "spot" pattern on splake is very different based on the very few places we catch splake out west here. Splake is a Brook/Lake Trout Hybrid (Char family) same as bulls.

But ....this is 100%, pure bull .... nothing I see here says splake to me. Dorsal spots are present on Splake - dorsal spots are never found on bulls. This one has clean fins with no spots ....
