Default What are these strange things at Gleniffer Lake?

I took a walk across the lake since the water level was way down. I came across these creepy-looking suckers that were attached to a northern cliff face. Any idea what they are?

Wow, really? These were everywhere, that's a lot of birds. I saw no birds around though. Maybe they're abandoned?

We see them all the time on the limerick banks of the Clearwater and the Athabasca .

You can also find them on the underside of most bridges in the prairies. I remember "running the gauntlet" on a bridge over the Battle River in a little rubber raft. The river was so slow, and there were so many birds that it literally raining bird poop.

...The stuff you think is fun when you are a kid...

Default Bank or Cliff Swallow

Based upon what I see on pages 247 and 249, Birds of Alberta by Chris Fisher and John Acorn, Lone Pine Publishing.

Those are the nests of Cliff Swallows. The nests are built of little pellets of mud. You can also find them on the sides of buildings and bridges.
Bank Swallows actually tunnel into the cliff and then build their nest at the end of the tunnel.

Every year the last five, at fort Mackay industrial park, they would nest on one of the Haul trucks, out side the shop, couple hundred, nests',
We would wait till the fledging flew, and go back to repairing it, after a water blast,
They keep the bugs down.

They look like Tribbles with their mouth open to me.
Better call Bones and find a disposable crew member just in case..

Anyone that grew up in southern Alberta that swam in the irragation canals know exactly what these are. Nothing like a couple thousand Swallows exiting the bridge as you floated under. Piles down the milk river floating by writing on stone, on the hoo-doos as well. Good times.

Don't let everyone fool you. Those nests are used by spawning brown trout.

Cliff swallows.
