Default Shots for close range coyote

Fellow Members,

I had some yotes sneak up on me at the last time I was out. I'm thinking to get a shotgun also and wondering what size shots do you use in this situation? For what distance is it good for?
I appreciate your help.

Heavy shot I believe its called. Its made for coyote at close range like 50 yards.

I've used both #4 Buck and 00 Buck out of the 12 gauge for coyotes. I found 00 Buck anchors the coyotes more consistently. (Lead pellets) I just found packing a rifle and shotgun a real pain.

Thank you for your responses.
To compare the 4 shot, Dead Coyote and the 00 shot, how bad are they on the pelts?
I guess the 00 would completly destroy the hides. How about the other two?

Only shot four coyotes with 00 Buck but no hides destroyed. I was using 2 3/4" (9 pellets) Federal shotshells.
The #4 Buck more often than not required a second shot or third.

I've never used one- had them come in from behind, or all of a sudden appear in front, shot them with the .222 same as I would at 200 meters.

Unless they are still running , a rock is my second shot .. I'm using a 22-250 but would like to get my Dad on one with his 12 .Had lots close enough but usually not where we need them for him to get the shot .

When people have suggested #4 shot...I believe they mean #4 buckshot, you wouldn't want to use birdshot unless it was BB or larger I would think....

First ever coyote I called in was with an elk diaphram call and I was sitting in my treestand with a 12guage and BB......he came right under my stand and when I clicked off the safety he looked up at me.....a quick head shot was quite effective.

I had a similar situation with a call but it led into a 10 yard shot. He was down though. I've had more probs this year with yotes than ever. 2011 to 2012 that is.

Are you using 2 3/4 in the #4 buck? I have had good luck with it in the 3" havent had to follow up unless its a shot in the butt running away even then usually catch the back of the head. My gun patterns the #4 better than the 00 so maybe that has a lot to do with it as well.

The #4 Buck shot was also 2 3/4" and using a modified choke. Never did try 3" or 3 1/2". I no longer pack a shotgun for calling set up's but my son sometimes will.
