Default Road-kill elk

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a road killed elk in all the years I’ve driven. But last night there was a dead bull in the nb ditch somewhere n of Calgary and then on the same trip I saw a dead cow also in the nb ditch prolly 30 or so miles north of the bull. I was wondering if some farmed elk had gotten out.

I have never a hit bull, but did see cows on few occasions. Definitely do not see elk as often as one would see deer or moose though.

I've seen a couple along H 22. one made it into our quarter before he died, Just a spiker, the antlers are hanging on the wall. during the hunting season, they get chased around quite a bit, inevitable one get's hit.

A friend hit 2 bull elk on Highway 3 at night near Elko, BC. Totaled his 3/4 ton truck and killed both big bulls. Shook my friend up real good too.

Default elk

Elk do get hit quite often, they make good bait for us trappers in winter. Hate to see it happen.

I have seen some really bad accidents involving Elk. Worst one I remember was a semi hitting a herd crossing Highway 1 just west of Morely, killed 11, made a hell of a mess of the truck. They definitely don't seem to get hit as often as Moose or Deer thought.

a couple of years back while Northbound on QE 2 , between Airdrie and the Crossfield turnoff, there was a good size bull ( very healthy sized rack ) , bunched up in that safety wire ( that divides North and Southbound lanes ).

Was about 7 pm on a sunny evening, and it looked pretty fresh but didn't or couldn't see any signs of bumper trama.

Once saw a good sized bull grazing in the cemetery at the Crossfield overpass.

Used to see Road Kill Elk Hwy 22 pretty frequently between Priddis and Turner Valley mostly when hunting opened in WMU 312 and they were heading en masse into the Bow Zone

Hitting an Elk will mess you up as shown above, just like a moose they roll into your windshield. Never hit one but back when I was in the Elk Valley I had numerous close calls on hwy 3 around Spawood and seen plenty of dead ones on the side of the road.. Super fun times driving in the darkness, snowstorms, and avoiding animals. Usually the Elk were pretty smart about crossing in-between vehicles compared to deer.

Your a lucky man Gade if you got away with only a bruised up face.

yes i agree, could have been much worse. Major concussion went with, no recollection of the event, but judging by the swaths of elk hair in the cab, there was a lot of him in there with me for a sec haha

Default road killed elk

Saw a dead cow on hwy 16 east of Wabamun last month. Never knew there were any that close to Edmonton, outside of a farm.

I would say that 20-30 elk a year get hit out by our ranch every year. The cars are more successful than the hunters hahaha

I was a little surprised myself I’m guessing that picture is an hour or two north of Whitehorse. I seen about twenty cows in the ditch last November one almost became bear bait when it came up out of the ditch and onto the road. Thankfully it decided to turn around I don’t think the driver of the bus noticed it as he didn’t have any reaction.
