They can be had for less than $100, and I personally think that's money well spent. (Better than an nfa membership; but I digress)
Politicians only care about votes, so the more voters who own ar15's (technically) the nicer the politicians will be to them.

The sky is the limit for ARs. There are a ton of good entry level brands already mentioned. I have a KAC SR15 but have also owned a Norc CQA and it ran like a top too.

I have a Rock River Arms LAR15 Mid lenght M4. It comes with a 2 stage match trigger and 1 MOA guarantee. It has the A2 front sight post and a BIS from the Army I some how was issued. I replaced the front grip with a Midwest Industries 9" free floating hand grip and put a Harris 9" bipod on it. Still haven't figured out which scope I'm going to get. Just missed trading some ammo for a Vortex Razor red dot. (Still kicking myself for that one). It does have a 16" barrel and the point of the mid length is to keep the dwell time in the barrel the same as the 14.5" military M4's. It adds some in weight as its a heavier profile but I don't notice it. Good shooter for the price I paid.

I've also had a Colt, FN and S&W15. They're all pretty good for the most part although personally I would never own a DPMS or Bushmaster. DPMS had bad QC.

You won't go wrong with that! I love Daniel defense but couldn't justify the end cost for what I wanted to do. You will enjoy it.

You did well getting the DD. I have an M&P 15 with magpul furniture on it and an Aimpoint PRO topping it. It is pretty basic, and does the job. I did it to have one in case of reclassification. It isn't really my thing, but I'm thinking of getting another anyway. I like the DD stuff, a couple guys at my range have them and they are pretty nice. The other option is the Sig Sauer, but it is pricey. I'm a sucker for Sigs though, so may go this route. A guy at my tactical course back in September was using one and he loved it. It is certainly over engineered and well built.
