This is my "foothills rifle", haven't hunted the mountains yet....:-)
Late 70's 700 action , Shilen #2, 9" twist 280AI @ 23" in a McMillan Edge Mountain Rifle pattern handle. Rifle Basix trigger, all metal Nitron blackened. Leupold 3.5-10 in Talley LW's. Comes in at 7-4 as pictured.
When I put this together 5 years ago I also did one in a lefty for my oldest son that's almost a mirror image of this one. His has a McMillan Hunter's Edge stock, a 3-9 Leupold and a 22" barrel, same chambering.

Yeah another 1500 should finish it off...I've only shot the 140 TBT federal out of it and it does ok. Finally got some 1x brass but was supposed to rp but quite a bit of fed in there. Lots o bullets and powder combos to try now! And see what it likes.
Not expecting a bunch with not bedded and factory skinny barrel and my limited skills but if I find something good the barrel will stay for a while as the stock is more important to upgrade at this time for sure.

Nice rifles everyone

It's stiff and light. It would be better with checkering but otherwise it's good.

Rem 700 Mountain SS in 7mm08 w/ a Leupold 6x36mm.

It weighs 7 lbs 1 oz scoped, unloaded. Pretty light, but the stock weighs 32 oz and I'm considering getting a Wildcat Composites stock to shave off 13-15 oz or so.

For what it may be worth, keep in mind when in sheep country you are also in grizzly country. In fact when hunting sheep I usually see away more grizzlies than I do legal rams. I feel more comfortable knowing I can stop something bigger than a ram. As such, I carry a .338 Win. Mag. in a Sako 85. Weighs around 9 pounds. The few extra pounds is well worth the confidence and comfort my rifle provides.

Default savage

I am using a savage light weight hunter in .308 with a burris FFII weighs about 6.4 pounds without sling or ammo. love it, really pointable and balanced, nice walnut stock (probably not best for the mountains but I like the looks better than a synthetic and a savage cost less than half a kimber so im not worried about scratching it.) I am considering rechambering to 300wsm if that would be possible

This is the rifle I'm thinking of picking up in 7mm-08. How do you like the A7, my local gun store has it on sale right now but its a lot of money to drop with the economy the way it is.

I think the same way as you Ranger! maybe I'm a glutton for punishment but my 9.25 pound 375 Ruger has been my sheep rifle for 4 years.

There are some nice set ups here. Mine is just a factory Browning with a stainless fluted barrel and carbon fibre stalk in a 300wsm topped with a Swarovski Z3 4-12x50.

Heres, mine,
plain old finlight .2506, and Leopold 3.5x10 , fitted with a moderator, been my main rifle for hunting in New Zealand for several years, few deer, one Bull Thar, and a couple chamois now, touch over seven lbs.

Just bough this custom Kimber .260 back from Canada this trip. 5.lbs 02 oz all up, feels like a toy, built by Jess, who is on here, only about 25 feral goats shot with it,

Quick question...wouldn't you rather have a heavier rifle that's a little more forgiving to shoot and shed weight on the rest of your gear? Assuming long shots are the norm.

Going to wake this thread up again as I'm going to be using a different rifle this year.
Tikka T3 lite SS semi custom in 270 with Swaro Z3 3-10x42. 7lbs 6oz scoped and after this season I'm going to hopefully switch to a lighter stock than the B&C.
My wife will be using her Sako A7 soft touch in 270 with a VX1
3-9x50 which is only an couple ounces heavier.

Is that "spare electrical tape" to help your barrel harmonics? If so that's a nice diy way of doing it. not bad on the eyes either.

Or is it actually spare tape?

This will be the first year out for my new rifle. Kimber Montana .280 AI. Pretty much stock other than re-bedded and some crown, trigger, and barrel channel work by Henry Rempel.
Topped with a Z5 3.5-18x44. Just shy of 7lbs all in. The T3 that I've sheep hunted with in previous years is about 1lb heavier. The kimber sure is a bit more lively, lol.

That stock isn't Carbon Fiber. It's dipped to look like it.

You should sell it to me and buy an actual carbon stocked gun.

I restocked this rifle. It now weighs 6 lbs 3.7 oz scoped. 5 lbs 7 oz bare. Stock finished at 19.8 oz.
