Default Lets see your sheep/mountain rifles

I'm slightly obsessed about lighter weight rifles that get strapped to a pack and hiked miles into the hills, so lets see what you guys are using! Customs or factory rifles don't matter.

Cool thread, if possible can you also mention weight?

I have owned more than my share of sub 5 1/2lbers, but am down to one.
My current MR in 308. Sorry for the poor picture.

My go to rifle is Christensen Arms extreme in 270wsm. A bit over 6 1/4lbs. It hasn't killed a ram yet but has taken a couple moose and mnt caribou off the mountains. It will be used on mnt goat this October too.

The other is a m7 in 7mm08. it around 6lbs I picked up this spring. It's taken a 20" black bear and a wolf so far. Hopefully a bighorn in sept.

Is that 270wsm 6 1/4lb bare rifle or with the scope and mounts?
Toss that m7 into a wildcat, add talley lightweights and it will lose a pound +/- they handle/point better too.

6lbs bare haven't weighed it with the talleys or scope just a guess.
There was a guy selling a wildcat stock on here but he never replied to my pms. Still looking. I will buy one next spring if I can't find a second hand one.

Here is mine. Not really a lightweight sheep rifle but my go to rifle forever. Old straight 6x Ziess scope, Remington action, Shilen barrel, composite stock, in 300 wtby. 7lb 15oz with the scope on it. Have been looking at a true lightweight rig to shave a couple pounds off. Got a 7 rem mag and a 270 win in Remington actions that never get used I should trade or sell and get a light rifle. Maybe Santa will be good this year.

My go to Mountian rifle is a weatherby m5 ultra light about 6.5-6.75lbs scoped
Just picked up the wife a rem 700 from JessS in 7-08 for the wife it weighs in right at 6lbs with 3 shells and the scope. And built myself a Christensen in a 264 it's over 8lbs but I may carry it this year just cause I can.

I thought the obsession with light rifles only happens to guys like me on the downhill side of 50,but I did just pickup a new HS precision that weighs 5.5 lbs.

Haven't really put it on a scale but I'd say under 6lbs...

TC Pro hunter
18" 45/70 barrel
....bit of recoil to this one

Also have a 28" 7-08 tube for it that I will be getting shortened 4" when I get around to corlaines again...

Nice easy packing rifle.

bought a custom 6.5 x 55 on a husky action at the Calgary show from an old BC sheep hunter

2x7 leupold compact

20 inch barrel

timmney trigger

amazing wood /fit /finnish

his reload info was right on and gave .5" groups with 125 & 140 gr NP's

his stated longest shot was a lasered 450 yds on a Stone Sheep

Not my sheep gun, but none the less a light rifle that would work well on sheep.

Kimber Montana in 280 Ackley with a Zeiss HD5 3-15x42 RZ 800 on it. A set of Talley light weights would probably shave about 2oz's or so.

It likes 140gr TTSX's

Might go up for sale in the spring when my other rifle arrives

Nice set-up, whats the range distance for that paper target? You don't need sloped rail/mount on that scope?

It's 100yd target, not the best group I've shot with the rifle, just the only group I've taken a picture of. It averages around 1/2" MOA with the load I have worked up for it. As for my scope mounts, it's just regular leuopld mounts with a rapid z 800 tested and verified out to 800yds on 12-1/2 power.

Used to like these threads! Here's mine that I'd take if/when I go, just waiting on a sheep draw

Both are 700 TI's

I would call the top one full custom, it's a 6.5 rem mag and is 6lbs with rings, 7.1/2 ready to go loaded with the zeiss up top.
Could be 6.1/2 all in with a wildcat, skinny barrel and a vx3 2.5-8x36 but not gonna change this one as its more of an everyday one and wanted a bit heavier barrel for accuracy/shoot ability.

Bottom I'd call a semi custom as all factory parts, it's a 280 and is hair over 6 with rings IIR, and close to 7.1/2 loaded up. Slowly messing with it, replaced trigger with trigger tech and have a gretan pin on the way. Stock is heavy at 32oz so keeping and eye out for one of those, and will eventually replace the barrel with a jury same cartridge and it will be done. This one should shed 1/2-3/4lb easy when done or maybe 6.1/2 with a little scope.

I have a couple factory m700 Mtn rifles and a M7 XCR that could maybe go up a hill or two as well, there 8lb dressed. If I was really worried about weight a cost was a factor I'd try a Montana or assent or Forbes with a skinny leupold and be done.

The .284Win on a Rem 788.
MPI glass stock.
3-9x compact Leupold.

All up with three rounds of ammo and a Uncle Mikes ultra sling:

7.625lbs.

My sheep hunting days are likely long gone, but when I had her built that's what it was for.

Not a sheep rifle, or particularly light, but when I am climbing or carrying any distance, I tend to carry a Ruger m77 Ultralight.

Tuffbuff, that 280 does it for me. However it needs a fresh stock and BDL bottom metal.
