Default Improved modified choke for waterfowl

My son just bought a franchi affinity and he is wondering if a imp modified choke is safe for steel shot.

Generally most manufacturers list the Mod as the max for steel shot. I would not risk it. Always test on the patterning board.

I bought an aftermarket IM tube for my 870.
My patterns got worse with it, when I used steel.
But in 16 yard trap it shines.

My benelli SBE 2 says steel shot NOT ok with improved modified. I'll be honest, if you want a good steel tube, but a Patternmaster choke tube. With that and shooting the cheapest 3" #2 or BB shot money can buy, my self and my friends have hammered geese out to 60 yards and once or twice out to 80. Extended long range is the model we use and it's deadly! You'll never have to buy expensive shells ever again

I am curious as to how it will pattern.

I'm curious as why you would want an improved modified choke for waterfowl in the first place?

At decoy ranges with large shot its going to obliterate them.

At effective range most people aren't good enough shots to use them.

Depending on the load and the barrel, and the particular choke, I find that either IC or LM works best for me. Any tighter, and the patterns start to get patchy.
