What is the "typical" distance for sheep shots? What percentage under 200m, 300m, 400m ... and over 400m?

I've killed a ram at 37 yards and one at 300 yards.
It's just like any other hunting, every situation or stalk will work out different according to conditions.

Built a rifle to go 800 plus and shot my ram at 35 yards....shot 3 more critters that year all with bow, 40, 53, and 65 yards...that's irony.

My sheep gun is blazer k95 in 270 win...too pretty to post online sorry.

I practised long range out to 800 yards and killed my ram at 60 yards . Another ram kill I was on was at 25 yards . Maybe that's what happens when bow hunters go rifle hunting..lol..

Killed mine at 75, 400, 50, 400, 10 and 300 yards. Just depends on the situation and country you are in, but shots probably average on the longer side as a rule. The rest of the rams that friends have killed are all over the map in distance but probably average about 250 yards. We haven't shot at rams over 400 isn yards that I can recall except one ram that had a broken leg from someone or something else. We never did get that ram either.

I have a new rifle on the way that fits this category perfectly. You can find them at WSS and other retailers but I had to have prophet river dig one up for me in a 270 but it should be here this week and I'll post some pics. It's the new Weatherby Northmark and weighs 5lbs 6oz and I have a Swaro Z3 3-10x42 and Talleys to top it off with so my guess is a 6lb 6oz rifle once it's ready to fire!

I would probably use this one:

Stainless Winchester 70 Featherweight in a McMillan Edge stock, Leupold FX-II 4x33mm and Warne QD rings. I'd maybe switch to Talleys to save weight, maybe go to an FX-II 6x36mm. I don't think either would make a huge difference, and the QD rings would come in handy with another scope or an Aimpoint in a pack. Weight-wise I'd rather have less scope and more barrel.

Good thread.I have settled on a Browning BLR takedown-270 win and I shortened the barrel and length of pull. The rifle is just under 39"and carries a Burris variable scout scope.Slides in a scabbard, can carry it across my lap and can take it down and put it in a dry pack in a rainstorm.Good saddle rifle and it is my sheep rifle too.I have no idea how to post pictures though..works for me

John b, what are you running for hand loads out of your 7-08, and what sort of velocities are you getting above a standard 7-08?

Default 2016 Mountain Rifle

I figured I better chime in on this thread. Here is my Mountain rifle for my 2016, sheep, elk, & mule deer hunt.

It's a Kimber 84m Montana in 338 Federal, I had a brake put on, fluted the barrel, added a lightweight CVMW trigger guard & bare rifle is 4lbs14oz. Topped with Talley lightweights & VX3 2.5-8x36 it is 5lbs11oz.

Its shooting 180gr Accubonds real nice.
Good luck to all.

Nice rifle, but since when did they start making a .338 in a short action. The 84M is a short action. Would this not be a 8400 Magnum.

Keeps debris out of the end of your barrel whether is be dirt, pine needles, packed snow or whatever you might find and it will prevent a blow up! The force of the air in front of the bullet blows the tape off before your bullet even gets to it so it does not effect your shot.
