Are .50 cals prohibited yet?
Had a discussion this morning with a friend regarding the likes of the .50 BMG rifles. Are they prohibited in Trudeau’s new decree? Do they exceed the new maximum energy rule?

They certainly exceed the 20 mm bore rule and as such, are prohibited.

I get the 10,000 joules part but they can’t be over 20mm bore size?
Where and why did they come up with this 10,000 joules thing anyway?

Sufficient to penetrate the light armor preferred by UN Blue Helmets.

So why can’t you just load some light .50 BMG rounds or whatever such as to not exceed 10,000 joules of energy and keep your rifle?
I’m assuming the 10,000 joules is measured at the muzzle?

Pity the poor bugger who paid big bucks for the one in the Olds sale.

It’s just so ridiculous. Has anyone in North America committed a crime with a .50 BMG?

Look at the size of a 3” Shotgun case? I’m sure someone could make a shell that would hold enough powder to do 10,000 joules with a big foster slug or whatever??
Canadian gun laws never have made sense but it seems it gets worse every day.

Already been done.
The use of the word 'capable' deliberately broad to allow arbitrary reclassifications in future. The word 'capable' was central to R. v Hasselwander. Hopefully this is challenged for 10 kJ criterion and struck down as overally broad. Do they mean design, proof or burst load? With barrel installed or capable of being equipped with a barrel?

So what if somebody invents a hotter powder or propellant of a different kind?
.22LR or some other small caliber rifle could produce 10,000 joules in theory.
(For conversation sake atleast)
So if .50 BMG is banned isn’t that an ammunition ban and not necessarily a “gun ban”?

I see what your saying. And dont worry they said the ammo is banned as well.
They listed a lot of 50 cal models in the ban specifically as well. So no getting around it by loading up your trail boss loads with those. Lol
