Default Where you staying

Question for all you hunting this week is where are you staying overnight? Is there a campground close by for RV? Hotel? I'm hoping to find a place to park my camper for a few nights. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with both you and Hal....if you have ever hunted Wainwright (pretty sure you both have) you know the "riot act" is read after a day or two into the hunt each year because of the few people who don't listen and can't follow the rule set out during orientation.

I think this is a great opportunity that has been created....hope it comes through as being a great event from the guys running it.

I have hunted Wainwright a half dozen times or so, and one morning after orientation, we had the pleasure of being pulled over, and having a very large corporal shine a spotlight in our faces, before letting us continue on. The next morning, we were informed that they were looking for some individuals that were observed drinking alcohol on the base. Apparently the individuals were found at that checkstop, and escorted off of the base. The military has very little tolerance for people that don't follow the rules.

Hopefully some cows move around for you boys tomorrow! This is not just a test case they do want the elk taken... No silly tin hat theories.

It is a shock no elk were taken...I guess the old saying "the grass isn't always greener on the other side" comes to mind.

Good luck!

Was on the base all day today, lots of animals, 100+ bull elk, largest 380-390 7x9, one good whitetail 160+ as a 4x4, largest muley 180 typ., would have loved to have had my camera with me but it wasn't allowed. Also picking shed antlers was not allowed, didn't see any though which suprised me considering how many bulls are on the wintering range. (someone must have an incredible collection) Also saw hundreds of antelope with some of the bucks starting to shed there horns.
The staff, range patrol and F&W where awsome. Everyone I saw and talked to was very pleasant and it was a great experience to be out there today. Looking forward to the rest of the week.

Not sure where you guys are getting your info from. Area 3 will not be used tomorrow. The area will be announced at the briefing in the morning. And as for the herds they are not static and continually moving. There is also no Artillary firing this week, although military operations that are conducted on the base are not to be made public knowledge on this forum. For any clarification people can use the contact number they were given and inquire rather than spreading rumors.

What I loved about the hunt that you could pick up animals 2-3 miles away with the naked eye, it was a winter wonderland, put the spotting scope up on those big bulls and See the steam coming from their nostrils, see them lay there head back and run about 20 ft and say to them selfs they guys are not going to hurt me, and just walk or start feeding again

Ooooooook don't worry I won't share what military people that are working there are telling the hunters anymore. Good grief.

Well whichever "military person" is telling you this is uninformed. Just thought I would set the record straight as these rumours quickly get out of hand.

my good friend just dropped a huge cow, just helped him load it. My turn next I hope! About 200 head sitting on the wrong side of the road.

How did everyone find out about this hunt to apply? I didn't even hear about this until this week and of course all the tags were gone. I doubt I would have even applied myself but would have loved to put my niece in. Just disappointed we were not given an opportunity so I'm curious how this was announced to the public.

Was on the "mywildalberta" site, also brought up here....and it was an absolute gong show to try and get a first come first serve tag....

I have a tag for this hunt as well. But havent been able to find any info on it really. Where do we stay? do we find a hotel in town or what? Would i be able to just bring my trailer and set up camp somewhere near/on the base? Also am i allowed to bring a hunting partner along with me or is it only me with the tag that is allowed on the base?

It was an absolute massacre this morning. Herd of 4-600 head and a row of trucks. They didn't even run. Everyone around me was careful to pick out a single animal and stop shooting immediately. The way everyone helped eachother this morning restored my faith in my fellow outdoorsmen. People with filled tags running around when they didn have to just to help guys fill a tag. It was amazing to see.

That herd was on the wrong side for the hunters. Was funny seeing 6 guys, myself included, drooling over 200 head we couldn't shoot. Little did we know the "big" herd would be coming shortly after - this time on the right side.

Took mine with a nice neck shot - lots of good meat!

Good on you guys. There are going to be some completely immobile coyotes fat on those gut piles.

Not to be a downer but was it at all sporting? or was it more of annihilation of sorts?

It's called a "cull" for a reason I am guessing.... Reduce the numbers plain and simple....

Can't wait for the 19th!!

If there is CWD monitoring, was 200 tags statistically significant with the population on the base? Sure hope that they find nothing on the heads as big herds like that CWD could go rampant through the base.
