Default I’m thinking about rebarreling my model 70 30-06 to …

30-06. Any thoughts? Thinking about loading some heavy longer range bullets. What twist should I go to? What bullet? Any experience? What could my effective range be?

How heavy? To run at a reasonable velocity you’re probably looking at about 200gr at the most, don’t need to be a very fast twist for that. Maximum range is going to depend on bullet choice with regards to minimum expansion velocity.

Talk to Mike at KS Arms, he'll have some good advice and can make you a barrel to fit your needs. He does really good work.

200 grain Sierra spbt is excellent quarter mile bullet in regular 30/06.
30-06 is pretty hard to beat. US marines wouldn't give up their Springfields and still used them in ww2 . Didn’t want the Garand even when available and of course that was a 30-06 too but not as good as the Springfield when given to marines that could shoot

I was thinking 180 or 190 gn bullets. What is the effective range? I’m not thinking really far but is 600 or 700 yards reasonable?
I’m not absolutely set on 3006 but it was my first rifle so there’s a bit of sentimental value there. I currently don’t 30 calibre too.

Your maximum range depends on what your expectations are. Are you looking for 2000 fps minimum or 1500 ft-lbs minimum? Are you reloading your ammunition? A 200 ELD-X started at 2680 will hold the 2000 fps to about 450, and holds 1500 ft-lb to about 600. It will stabilize through a 1-11” twist barrel. The 30-06 is a bit short on horsepower for really long range work, which is where the big 7mm or 300 magnum cartridges shine.

Crunch some numbers through a ballistics calculator.

What you are going to run into is maintaining the minimum expansion velocity for the bullet. 600 yards is certainly achievable in that regard but you will likely need to select a higher BC bullet that is designed for longer range and lower expansion velocities. Something like the 175 barnes Lrx or 190 nosler ablr should do it, I’m not personally a fan of the hornady eld series for hunting but there are offerings there as well as Berger that can achieve the same ballistically. A 1-10 twist should be sufficient for most options but if you’re ordering a new barrel anyway it wouldn’t hurt to go a little faster twist. Going to a longer barrel would help with velocity as well.

You forgot to tell us what you're using the rifle for... Hunting at long-range, or just target shooting ?

I'm guessing the bold statement was a typo, and you meant to say you don't reload 30 calibre ?

Myself, I like smaller calibres (6mm to 7mm) and the challenge it brings to get them shooting good - at distance...

Hell, if I was you I might even rechamber in 25-06 ! Depending what other cartidges you currently shoot.

Sorry, That was meant to say I don’t own a useable 30 caliber. I definitely reload. I do have a 3006 that is worn out and wasn’t sure what to do with it.

I would plan on doing both shooting and hunting. The 3006 is a very manageable recoil gun that packs decent Power.

If I had a worn out 30-06 that needed rebarreling it would become a 280Rem or 280AI. Shoot Barnes, Accubonds or swift Sciroccos. After my last experience with ELDX, I think they are only only good for paper.

Yes, I certainly agree with you. Those are also choices I’m considering. The thing is I have a 7rem mag and a 708 rem. The 7 mag is possibly transitioning to 7PRC when it is at its end of life.

Default 30-06

I really like the 30-06 Cartridge ! Easy to load for and Accurate . Great Variety of weights and types of bullets . Prob gonna use mine for a Northern moose hunt this year with either a 168 or a 180 TTSX ! RJ

Default Cartridge choice

Have you considered 338-06? It an option to even keep the same barrel, just a re-bore provided your current barrel has enough meat rot

With light bullets the 30-06 is a ballistic duplicate of the 7mm RM at close range, but the better BC of the .284 bullets leaves it behind as the range extends.

If it were I; I'd rebore it up to a .35 Whelen, and then you'd have a nice medium bore to throw good 225 gr. bullets at a reasonable velocity.

And a rebore is cheaper, and from what I hear usually very accurate. Very possibly more accurate than the original fresh bore. I believe that's due to cutting through a bore that may never been fully stress relieved, or possibly now straigher.

😂 😂 😂

……..600 is really far!

Im shooting and 06 with a 150g ttsx it’s still carrying just enough velocity for 600yds, but man that’s a long poke and would only be utilized on an animal that’s already been hit. Inside 400, which is obviously the vast majority of anyone’s hunting in Alberta it will handily take everything on the menu.

280 Rem is the answer here. Regret getting rid of the ones I had. Lower recoil and great choice of bullets.

Truth is these cartridges are all so similar that the outcome on game is going to be the same. Nothing lives with a hole in it’s lungs.

Let us know what you decide on.

338-06 sounds like a nice project!

I totally agree on the .280 or .280 Ackley. Both cartridges come with excellent credentials.
