Default lefty or righty

All my buddies think its strange that i always switch my reels so that i reel in with my right hand. Just does not feel right to use my left hand to reel in.

what's everyone else's preference?

Rod in the left...reel in the right, but I am left-handed.

I keep the reel on left hand but hold the rod upside down so I can reel with my right. I don't know why I ever started this, I've fished that way ever since I was little and I can't switch. My buddies definitely think this is strange.

I'm the same as you. I realized that there is a bit of an extra step because I cast with my right hand, and then have to swap the rod to my left so I can reel with the right, but when I was a kid I started out with an old right hand retrieve spincast reel, and that's just what's comfortable for me now.

I can still function using somebody else's rod with the left hand retrieve, but it just feels really awkward.

I reel with right hand and am right handed. I have learned over the years to cast with my left but used to switch. When I want to cast really far I use both hands.

I golf right, bat left, hockey left and throw right. No real answer.

It drives me nuts(er) watching people reel like that, just aint right. Just depends on what you are used to I guess, I reel with my left because I cast with my right. Baitcaster I cast with my right and have to switch the rod to reel with my right hand, just the way they are designed, at least for me.

Cast with my right reel with my left whether spinning, fly,or baitcasting. I can do either and do somtimes for a break. I'm right handed.

I'm RH, I cast with the right, then switch rod to the left, then reel in with the the right. Golf right, hockey left (never understood that one since they are similar)

I'm just imagining how incredibly awkward i'd feel trying to reel in on the left side, i feel uncomfortable just thinking about it

That to me always looked weird. I am right handed, casting with right, reeling with left.

i do this, girlfriend does this. I didnt realize it was a taboo thing. i thought it was weird watching my dad hold the rod with the reel facing up. listening to you guys, there is to much hand switching going on and not enough fishing......

wait a minute, i was just trying to cast with my air-rod and i cant remeber which hand I cast with. I havent done it in months!

Cast with my left. hold rod with left. right is dedicated to reeling.

I cast with my right and reel in with my left on baitcasters and spinning reels.

Play hockey and golf left handed and bat left in baseball.

I am right-handed, but cast and reel with my right on spinning/baitcasting equipment (what I learned with, like Geezle)...but reel left with fly equipment.

I can't make a decent cast unless I stand on my hands holding the rod with my feet, facing away from the direction I'm casting, while wearing a rubber ducky costume.

Of course, my prude friend looks at me funny when we go fishing

Really though, I cast with my right and reel with my left, spinning or fly fishing.

You guys are freaks, go join the circus....

Fly and spin, reel with left hand, baitcaster reel with right. Play hockey left, golf right. We all got some freak in us somewhere, lol.

Yeah I did the ol' air cast too, I cast with the left and reel with the right. It just drives some people nuts that I hold the rod upside down but thats how I'm comfortable and I don't plan on changing any time soon.

Yah it all comes down to what feels right for the person and feels comfortable. As long as we can reel in that big fish who cares

I'm the same way OP, usually hold the rod with left hand, use my right hand to grab the line and open the cage on the reel, then cast and reel in the line with the right hand.

I'm right handed in everything I do, but have to hold the rod with the left hand!

One of my friends is left handed, except when he plays baseball, he has to catch with his left hand, take off his glove and then throw with his left hand. THAT is funny to watch. When he gets in a rush and the adrenaline is flowing, that glove comes off and gets tossed 15 ft, haha!
