I might have predicted the opinion of the majority would be divided between Sakko and the Mark V. You know I have only appreciated the Sakkos from afar. Could somebody give me the rundown on their key features (crf/pf, bolt throw, lug count, any unique machining to facilitate sliding). As for the Mark V, I have to agree its a great one.

I too enjoy it when the cheap rifle outshoots the delux one, but I have to give credit to the makers of the smooth but pricey actions. I'm just thankful there are so many mausers kicking around so that great actions can also be gotten at a cheap price.

Loved the passion shown. Good on ya everyone.

Smoothest action I've ever seen, Carl Gustaf, m7000- husky I believe.
Sako comes next.
Strongest, CZ BRNO 602 or 550, one of the best m98's ever made.

Default Best action

Gotta give the Sako another nod! However, I also have custom guns on both the 98mauser, and the new Win CRF model 70 actions as well. CRF rules!
The biggest reason I give top marks to the sako, over and above the others,is the scope mounting system.

For me? My custom "G" Series LH Model 70 and here is why:

All steel large dual apposing locking lug controlled round feed receiver. Chrome Moly for ball bearing smooth feel to the action.

Custom smooth knob bolt handle for ease of manipulation without wearing on hands and equipment. Model 70 style open trigger mechanism that takes K.I.S.S. where it should be. It works in all types of conditions. I have another that has been expertly "shotgun faced" for a left hand shooter that will replace this one some day. A stock with an expertly shaped grip that is open enough yet not overly so and is just right in diameter.

A barrel contour that tapers quickly in the middle leaving meat at the muzzle and at the same time also pushing weight between the hands not under the forehand. A sling swivel stud placed far enough forward as to not bight the hand under recoil and a forend that is nicely checkered and substantial enough to hang onto.

An extra long spring steel extractor that is longer than the factory offering to remain captured inside the rear bridge (more on that later) and made of heat treated spring steel as apposed to metal injection moulded. Three position safety.

An ejection/loading port that has been expertly opened to longer than factory Holland and Holland specs for ease of and positive loading. Custom fitted steel scope mounts that are rugged, allow for low scope mounting and do not overhang the ejection port.

A stock that is cast on (for left handed shooter) and straight comb to allow perfect sight alignment every time.

Nice flat bedding surface for steel one piece aftermarket bottom metal.

Nicely shaped shadowline cheek piece that brings some form to function. No pancake cheek piece here thank you very much.

Custom heat treated stainless steel magazine box that is wider to allow four belted magnum cartridges in the belly of the magazine without a "drop box" or perch belly stock. A follower that is designed to allow a single round to drop into the magazine well and still ride up under the extractor as the round is pushed into the chamber.

They are just about perfect.

Now that is a really nice piece. Thanks very much for this walkthrough as it gives me some perspective and inspiration.

RPA International GP Hunter, AII AE Mark III, PRW Coyote, Half MOA accuracy guarantee. Nothing better or more expensive, in factory turn-bolt rifles.

My Sako AV as the best action of any of the rifles I've owned -- so I look forward to seeing the new Sako 85 lefty in 6.5x55!

Special thanks to Chuck for a detailed description of a thing of beauty, which itself is a thing of beauty. Practically poetic.

My favourite model of rifle is the remington model 700, mostly because it has the most amount of aftermarket parts available.

Among the factory actions supplied on rifles in the 1K$ range, I like the TC Icon ...why:
3 lug bolt with large diameter / relatively small ejection port for rigidity, recoil lugs are integral to the action / scope rail is integral to the action / 70 degree bolt lift.
Not much experience with a variety of custom actions, but I like the Barnard's. Again, 3 lug bolt, small ejection port...and they are silky smooth when cycled and close with little effort.

I lean hard to CZ. The first time I shouldered one it fit so fine I was hooked. I'm tall and the Tikka was a tad short in the pull. Sako has a three lug bolt, CZ and Tikka two. I have synthetic stock firearms, they are for sale. The wood stocks take a lot of the recoil out over the plastics. Sako has top shelf furniture so of course more $$$. I found this

Of course in the end it all depends on how much you want to spend.

Pre-64 Model 70; especially the later versions. That was the highest achievement in bolt action design and manufacture, IMO. Husqvarna, Gustaf are slicker but not as robust.

Everything else is just.....everything else.

Are we talkin over-the-counter type guns...then its blaser strait pull. Seriously its lite years ahead.
Then easily its mark 5,
I like certain aspects of many brands,
Wby machining feel and short throw,
Remmington safety position and movement,
Ruger three position safety
Savage locking system
Least favourites would easier !

This is about the smoothest action ever manufactured, 100 years ago.
Only Rifle in the World supposedly that will slam the Bolt shut by ITSELF, when tilted downward with the trigger depressed. (mine does)
Not reccomended obviously, but it's the only Rifle action I, or anybody else I know..... has ever seen smooth enough do that.
Go try yours.....

Voere Titan II. Unfortunately the rifle is no longer manufactured. With an open bolt one only to tip the rifle forward about 15 degrees, and the bolt slides shut. Absolutely no slop in it.
