Default Steaming Flies

Thought I'd share a trick I learn a couple years ago here on AO. If you have any flies in rough condition with bent hairs or flat feathers, etc. then you need to steam them to bring them back to life. A tea pot with boiling water works best. Put your flies, one at a time, into the concentrated steam coming out of the spout with forceps. Before your eyes, the flies will fluff up and straighten out. This trick has saved me from buying or tying lots of extra flies that I don't need. Hope this is helps some of you. Tight lines

Don't forget the forceps,,,, long handled preferably!!!!

You can take it another step further and use a hair dryer to dry and fluff the flies after steaming...

Just one word of caution,,, this trick works great on natural materials like hackle,,,, be careful not to apply to much heat to some synthetics like tinsel flash, too much heat can cause twisting and curling.

All in all,, a good project for a cold winters day in April!!!!

Cold winter days in April...

Who's betting no open water till June? Lots of time to steam flies me thinks.

Great tip BTW.....

UV resin heads don't seem to like it much, don't put them in the steam stream if you can help it.
