Default Big bulls last bugle

Finally got one talking during rifle season. It's been tough since the great migration of Sept 17th.

I pulled into my spot an hour before legal shooting. The woods have been surprisingly quiet the past 3 days. Normally I can listen to elk bugle from this lease all morning. But not a peep in the hour I waited. As the sun started to light up the sky I began my walk into where I figured the herd would be held up. I made it the 1km through the cutblock and waited... The silence was soon broken by the hoarse growl of a bull. I knew there was 3 good herd bulls running his valley. When I heard his scratchy thunder bugle I knew which one he was. The hunt was on.

The wind was wrong so I decided to sweep south and come up the drainage. The bush up in saddle hills is thicker than Jesus's beard... It was a tough crawl. I could hear him bugling with what sounded like 2 other bulls for a while. I was just creeping trails cow talking. It wasn't my first time chasing bulls in this exact spot, I came into one of the better spruce thickets on the edge of a 20yr old cutblock.

It had been quiet for a while, I had something in the thick bush at 25-30yds but I figured it was a satilitte or a cow when I heard him bugle 100yds away. I moved up and gave out a really ****ty estrus call, he lit right up just in the cutblock! He was being very vocal, lots of gutteral growls and moaning! Hunting elk alone is a tough game! Experience has shown me lots, and when a herd bull isn't coming to you, you must go to him... So I tucked low and slipped into the thick cutblock. As soon as I got in I spooked a cow! Darn! I thought it was over. I quickly cow called a few times quickly, he screamed a thunder bugle! He was close and coming. I took a few more steps and waited. I shouldered my rifle as I saw tan coming. In the crosshairs and out comes a cow! But with a nose in her butt was something else!! I've seen the sight before, normally I'm guiding or just the caller... As he came though the poplar with his head tilted back nosing that hot cow I realized it was me with the rifle.... He was facing straight on and bugling as he was walking! and when the cow cleared I sent one deep through his brisket. There was crashing all around me, I had no clue which one was him.

As all fell quiet I slowly walked up the 20yds to where I shot him... I wa glancing down when I got there and as I came around some alder I saw him standing there wobbly legged at 5yds!!! It didn't take me long to send one into his vital again. He ran 20yards and tipped over.

Well finally after hunting elk for 10yrs. After guiding and calling in for friends nearly a dozen elk I pulled the trigger on one

It was a bugle filled hunt, I didn't even let one out. Herd bulls normally don't like them I'm more than happy with him! I still left room for improvement.

When I upload my good photos I will post some.

Congratulations. It is a lifetime experience to be close in to a p---ed of bull. And that boy is a keeper. Your comment on the need to go to the herd bull is bang on. Nice job.

Where abouts is your cabin? We're out on the old BA road. Now called Cabin road. It sure was busy in the hills this year.

Went back to camp, grabbed two hung over helpers a quad a trailer and a chainsaw.... Flawless extraction. Only tipped the trailer twice!

Thanks guys, it's going to different not looking for a big bull in October. I guess I can focus on whitetails now. I'm pretty pleased for my first elk now I have to make a plaque for him to hang in the stair well
