Tent Trailer

I have a small to medium size truck, and love to go camping but my family is growing and the tent is no longer going to cut it. so i was considering getting a tent trailer. just looking for advice, Brands, and recommendations?

I would start by going to dealers and see what they have, what features are available and get an idea of new prices. From there you can decide what you want and need for your family, and decide if new is what you want or if affordability is a big factor start looking at used. As far as brands go, a little online research should find you lots of reviews etc.

I would suggest looking at a 17' hybrid. We went from tent trailer to hybrid then to travel trailer. I really enjoyed the hybrid. It was a huge step up from the tent trailer and not that much more $$$.

IMO, I would skip the hybrid. Buddy had one and furnace ran constently..Never had one but he says he regreted buying it and now loves the hardwall...

I guess it depends on what you are looking for....

Less weight equals less vehicle power...

We did the same upgrade from tent to tent trailer. We absolutely loved the tent trailer and got the add a room feature to greatly increase our living space. Went fifth wheel eventually but sold after 1 year as was not for us. Absolutely loved the Coleman with power up and indoor outdoor shower and the kitchen area did not flip over but rather pivoted down so you could keep all of your stuff in the drawers. Most fun and comfort we had. Never used in winter though but was always warm enough for Alberta May long weekend.

I've had 2 hard wall trailers (also a big RV but it just sits at Mara lake), we sold that last hard wall, as its just was not enough beds or bed space. Friends of ours where sells a tent trailer with a slide and 2 king beds on the end, for what they where asking I said why not try it. At this point I would not go back to a trailer.

Its super easy to pull, easy to see around and change lanes/

It has more bed space than we need, right now we just use the king beds but could easily separate the kids onto there own beds

Has a roof rack for either bikes, or the canoe

The downside, is it does not hold heat. However we figure if we go camping when its going to be cold (early or late season) we can go where there is power and use heated bed pads and electric heaters

storage, we have done 2 trips in it and are starting to get a spot for everything but lots ends up in the truck bed

Fridge, it has one but its small, we bought a good cooler to compensate.

It does have a furnace that is easy to turn on to take the chill off in the morning.

I quite like it, and at this point can not see my self going back to a hard wall any time soon.

Small truck will still haul a smaller hard wall.....

Totally agree, and you can have a good sized refrigerator too, not a little ice box.

And a stand up shower/tub plus a good furnace. We really enjoyed ours. It was a good compromise when the kids were little and I only had a small SUV.

I have another vote for the hybrid. We went from hard wall to hybrid. Both trailers were the same length but with the fold down beds in the hybrid the space is unreal. We love it and is suffice to all our present needs. The nice thing about the hybrid is with the furnace, at least in ours, holds heat really well. Camped May long in northern Sask with night time lows in low single digits and was very comfortable. Downside, which is the same as a tent or tent trailer, is the canvas does collect some moisture. With ours we open up bed windows/zippers and is dried out in no time. As said previous for the hybrid, prices are not much different from some tent trailers and have way more benefits.

I graduated from a tent to a tent trailer several years ago. Went with a Jayco 806. I believe it was the smallest model at the time. Sleeps six, but would be more comfortable with four (usually only two of us in it). Easy to pull behind my Tacoma. Thinking of upgrading to a small travel trailer, because Mrs. C wants the availability of a shower.

The downside to upgrading is the cost of the ferry to get off the island

Overall the tent trailer has been a great investment - just wish I could get more use out of than I currently do.

Best thing about a tent trailer is it's a place to put the canoe.

Bought a good used tent trailer that our family enjoyed for years, before reselling at a reasonable price. Great handling, kids could setup in 15 minutes. Biggest bonus was all gear went into the trailer. Had a heater and sink we never used, and we always cooked outside. Easy to operate without a power lot. We doubled the battery to run the patio lights.

When we got married, upgraded from a tent to a tent trailer....2004...

1995 12ft. Starcraft king size on one side and queen on the other side, came from Florida and had air condtioning

, toilet, shower and everything else but not furnace...hence from Florida. Dad found a furnace and I installed with Gas lines and ran a few ducts for $600....Bought in 2004 for $6000 and sold for $4500 in 2010....Great return for my money..LOL
