Baitfish patterns? Good catch rates?

Hey Adam~baitfish patterns with spooky fish in the morning (and when they're done spawning) but the go-to patterns are bunny leeches in loud colors. The fly in it's yap there is tied on a #2 Tiemco 300, white magnum bunny strip tail, cross-cut white rabbit body (tied bulky) with a couple of wraps of cross-cut red rabbit for the head.

Lots of folks fish "rope flies" for gar.
No hooks at all, just long, tangly strands for the teeth to get caught on.
Have you used such a thing?

Neat-o! Sounds like a pretty basic pike fly. Awesome fish, and thanks for the info!

I've heard of them. Took my kids fishing for them a few years ago with spinning rods, figured that kind of fly would guarantee some fish. It did. They are NO fun to get un-pinned, had to use a knife. Took almost 7-8 minutes. Good news is~gar have a primitive lung, and can breath air when there isn't enough oxygen in the water.
Here is a photo of my daughter with a gar caught on a rope fly. I use regular streamer flies (bunny leeches) and add a treble, trailer. They're notoriously short strikers, so you need something that hangs at the end, or just past the end of the fly if you want a chance at hooking one of these fish. They are abundant though.

Thanks for starting this thread!
I'm enjoying the pics; also having fun going back through my own pics- lots of fun memories.
Here's a couple pics from a fun day in the mountains with my buddy, BBT...
Crowsnest River rainbow...
BBT & our buddy, Tex, on the Crow...
Not quite as purty as a Crowsnest 'bow...
Frenchman's Creek...
Sometimes, ya gotta be out there before the sun comes up...
...'cuz these are around...
...and these guys are eating them off the top of the river...
Nothing like a heart-stopping toilet flush eat in the dark to test the ol' ticker, let me tell ya!

Ha-ha-ha!!!
Any dummy can catch a sucker on a San Juan Worm.
It takes a real hero to catch a minnow on a foam dry fly...
...you'll have to teach me how you do that!
CF8 on a southern Alberta river...
From the same day- an absolutely gorgeous cuttbow!
Oldman River cutts...
I caught this guy twice in about 10 minutes on a creek down south...
A pretty Bow River 'bow...
