Scary night near Nordegg.
My wife and I spent the weekend camping out by Nordegg, the area we were in had one other couple camping and that was it.We did manage to be-friend the other couple and enjoyed there company and some good food.On sunday morning around 300am just after we had called it a night we were startled by a loud scream that sounded like a women screaming. The neighbours quickly came to our spot and asked us what that was,I had no idea. The noise seemed to be coming from the north of us and not very far.We being the ''brave'' guys we arent walked toward the sound that seemed to be getting closer. It went off again and it sounded like a women being beaten or in pain.We both called out to the ''person'' and it went quiet but we could hear heavy movement in that direction. The thought of it being a cougar crossed my mind, but not being able to see the thing made that hard to tell.Out of nowhere we then could hear the same scream type coming from the east of us.The original critter then made a beeline right toward us and it was moving in a hurry,we couldnt see it but you sure could hear it.What ever it was it had just made it obvious it didnt want us any closer. We moved back to our camp and got the fire back up and nervously listened. The wife was in no mood to remain in the spot nor was the other fella's.To make matters worse we had what ever it was follow us right back to the camp.Never did see it,it sounded big though and we and the other couple headed out to a more well used camp ground.Gotta say it was a little freaky.
Question I have is what would scream like that and show signs of aggresion???

This all went on for close to a hour,it was pretty cold out so anyone brave enough to hit those remote woods at 300am would have to be brave. Also it sounded like we were charged at one point so what ever it was was on the ground,we could also hear it walking around. It was damn weird though...

Its weird that the noise seemed to approach you.....I have heard stories of small mammals like rabbits letting out "screams" when in distress...perhaps a predator had got a meal and it was the dying sounds of its prey????? Maybe when you approached the predator was protecting its kill????
I have a predator call that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up when you giver a blow on a cold winter morning.....

It's gonna be said...
So i might as well say it.
Sasquatch.
You know following the sounds of a screaming woman into the woods at night is sure way to get killed off in a horror movie and if it is in the movies it has got to be true.

animal
Ive heard a sound like that before. I likened it to a woman getting attacked as well.
I talked to a specialist before and he thought it was owl.
After hearing that noise, I also felt something russle against my tent, thinking it was a porcupine or a small animal, I gave it a kick and it was something ALOT larger than a porcupine as it didnt even budge to a large kick.
One eye open after that.

Great...I really like the area and now it will be tough to convince the wife to go back.I just let her know it was no big deal ''just another sasquatch''.

I'm voting cougar... Their mating call is said to sound like a woman's scream.
Did it sound like this?
There is another sound file here (in the media player window).

I agree with stinky. It was a cougar you heard. My father told stories of them and how they sounded just like a woman in distress. lol or like one bent on beating him with a frying pan.

My guess would be cougar as well. I have heard other stories of them sounding like a crying/screaming woman.

Listening to the cougar recordings and some other animals on-line I cant find the sound, no kidding guys I cant...So far based on the recordings I have listened to those can be ruled out.The ''sounds'' varied from long to short and although there would be no way of telling forsure seemed directed at us,also what ever ''it'' was had a buddy off to our east that made the same sound twice but was more distant.I know most of my animal calls and this just didnt seem to fit the ones I know. What was it?No idea...Scary?Yep sure was...

Bright Idea
I don't think I'd be "brave" enough to go investigate, although it would be understandably tempting if you thought it may have been someone screaming for help. One of those Borealis flashlights would be pretty good for something like that!

I've heard this sound before. It was a cougar and the tracks proved it. Damn near gave me a heart attack though. It was running along a back access road about 100 yards from the stand of trees two of us were hunting in. Was a long scream then a few short ones then another long one that seemed to be moving pretty quick. Friend and I both were still hunting and about 80 yards apart but we called out to each other pretty quick and didn't wander too far after that.

I'm voting bobcat or lynx, when these things start screaming you'd bet your life it was a woman. The cougar is simular but a litle more throaty, like comparing an old bull elk to a young one.

This isn't the first time I've heard of an experience like this. From what I recall, the culprit was indeed a Cougar. My wife and I have heard a Bobcat "scream" when camping by Sundre. We saw it and it wasn't very loud, which makes me think you heard a Cougar.
A little freaky that it followed you....Hope you had a camp gun!!

You should have had one of those Million candle power spot lights that you can see things a mile away, then you could have ID the critter pretty easy. The powerful light sure does screw up anythings night vision for a bit too as it is blinding when you have dialated pupils.
Oh and a camp shot gun is a good idea. You never know when a bear does not want to leave. Those "crackers" shot shells with report are pretty good, and work most of the time to drive off assertive animals. They use them up at Churchill on the bears near the towns. Also some farmers use them to drive fowl off of fields in the south. Basically the shell launches a fire cracker about a 100 yds and it goes off.
